Unfortunatley, this 964 board doesn't have as much traffic as Rennlist. Check over there on the 964 board. There's a few threads that got me scared of purchasing a 964 based 911!

i agree that the rennlist 964 board is excellent.

i have had my car for 3 years now and have had no problems except for an oil leak. don't be scared by this series they are great cars and most likely the early problems will have already been addressed by previous owners.

The 964 series unfortunately got a bad reputation because of two things: The Freudenberg dual mass flywheel and the cylinder leakage issue. The Freudenberg was replaced by the much more reliable LUK flywheel in 1992, and the cylinder leakage problems were addressed at the factory in the early 1991 production run (most of the cars showing the cylinder leakage problems, which are costly to fix, will be '89 and '90 models, and a few '91 models, but not many).

Odds are good that the Freudenberg has been replaced. If it fails it tends to fail early in the life of the car (often before 35K miles). If the car has the "early" engine type without the gasketted heads, the problems may not occur (if at all) until the car has a lot of miles on it (75K or more...and typically over 125K miles, but it CAN happen earlier). As far as these two problems go, here's my "canned" information on when the factory implemented the flywheel and engine modifications:

Engine serial numbers where the changeover from non-gasketted to gasketted heads
occured in 1991 as follows:

Manual Transmission: any number beyond 62 M 06836, M64.01
Tiptronic Transmisson: any number beyond 62 M 52757, M64.02

This change most likely took place in the fall of 1990 (unconfirmed by me).
----------------------------------------------------------
Engine serial numbers where the LUK dual mass flywheel was used instead of the Freudenberg flywheel began with engine number 62 N 01738. The change took place on May 13, 1992.

With a 964 you need to know what you are buying. If you do know what you're buying I think they can be INCREDIBLE values because the flaws I've just mentioned have forced the values of the cars down more than they ought to. The Freudenberg problem on the early C2s and C4s is quite real, but the severity of the cylinder head leakage problem in my opinion remains questionable. Freudenberg implemented a better quality control program on the flywheels because they knew they were in the process of losing their contract with Porsche, so the newer models have (hopefully) better flywheels than the '89-'90 models do.

With the flaws exposed, the 964 is an incredible car. I own a '91 with the factory updated cylinder heads but it still has the original Freudenberg in it. I considered this risk worth taking because I was so impressed with the power/performance improvements the 964 gave me over the older 3.2 based 911s that this was a price I was willing to pay even if my Freudenberg does fail. FWIW I used to own a Dodge Stealth RT/TT, and couldn't quite accept the loss of power that a 3.2L 911 presented to me. My car is low mileage (25K now) and I've owned it over a year and I've had NO problems with it.

The key is to KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BUYING!

Good Luck,

Bill Wagner
