1991 C2 Update

I took my 91 into local Porsche Specialist to look at my tiptronic and check out the overall car since I bought it without a full evaluation (reflected appriorately in the price though) They called and left me a message that they had some things to go over. Basically wanted my permission to do a leak down test as it was not firing properly on half the cylinders - spent the weekend guessing what the number or cost was going to be. I called and checked on Monday - the result - wrong sparkplugs - previous owner put AC Delco sparkplugs with wrong gap. So Monday was a great day.

Just a curious question. Did the shop happen to test the distributor to make sure the belt wasn't broken. Seems to me that even with the wrong plugs the cylinders would be firing. If the distributor belt was broken perhaps not but new plugs may mask the situation.

Even with only one of the distributors working the engine should be firing on all six cylinders.
I think his wrench is right.

Distributor

Good question - they did an electrical check to ensure both distributors were firing and checked the plugs to ensure they were getting spark. I have yet to pick it up since the shift cable needed to be replaced.

Funny thing is the mechanic asked if I could not tell that is what not up to speed. My reply was I have owned and restored 26 corvettes and never even driven a 911 until I bought this one. So I was dissappointed but with the transmission problem I could not isolate - I am looking forward to trying it with all cylinders firing correctly.

These engine have power even when they don't. I bought a 79 one time and it ran like crap and wouldn't go into 1st gear. I had to drive it up hill and onto my trailer in 2nd. When I got back to my shop I got to testing and found the plug wires were on backwards. The 79 is reverse to most so the engine was running on only 2 cylinders 1 and 4. Had been this way for quite awhile as the other plugs were absolutly clean as they had never fired. I reversed the order and fired it up. It must have went 5000 rpm as they had the idle so far open to make it run on only two.
