what is the socket size required to turn the front spindle nut on a 964?

You mean the axle nut? I'm not sure about the front, but the rear is a 32mm axle nut. It might be the same in the front. If it's anything like the rear, the torque value is ridiculous (340lbs), so get out a breaker+cheater bar or have a strong impact tool.
