Advice on buying a 964 Turbo
Good morning all I have been lurking around Pelican for a while now but mostly on the 930 forum. I recently sold my 930 and I am looking for another Porsche. I am considering a 1991 964 turbo with 45,000 miles on it the car looks very clean and well maintained. My question to the experts on this forum is what are the biggest differences between a 930 and 964 I know about the 5 speed and the suspension but are there any major differences? Also what if any problems can I expect from this car? What would you guys consider a fair price for a clean low mileage car like this? I loved all of my 930s they were a blast to drive but not very comfortable on long trips is there any difference in the comfort level? Any tips on what to look for when looking at the cars?Thanks for the help Mike

the 964 turbo is a much more useable car than the old 930. less lag, great ac. Power steering and ABS , power brakes.
Plug your air injection ports as at about 60k the tips disintegrate and eat your turbo impeller. These are starting to climb in value. The 91 has the same basic engine as the 930. The 3.6 is a different block. Really nice cars.

I would say 45-55 depending on the condition/service history and a PPI?

I've never owned a 930 - my '91 Turbo is my first Porsche and I just got it last fall - but I do know the 964 Turbo has a ton of upgrades (IMO) vs the 930 (but is also heavier so that is a big downside to some folks) - airbags, better turbo, better intercooler, improved intake tract (normal bypass valve), better transmission, better brakes, better suspension, better air conditioning, I also like the aero mirrors and more modern bumper covers - really makes the car look more modern. I also like the center console and shifter better. What I wonder is why no Cruise Control?? (I like long roadtrips :-) I bought mine in Phoenix and drove it back to Denver - was a GREAT and comfortable drive (took all backroads). The one major problem I'm aware of the EZ-69 ignition - NLA and VERY hard to find - very pricey if you can find one.
Sorry I'm no pricing expert. What wheels are on it? Quite a few 3.3's have 3.6 Speedlines on them and these are worth quite a bit. There is a 964 Turbo specific group on Rennlist and guys there who follow the market. Several hang out on the 930 board here, too....

Yes, I recently had to replace the EZ69 on mine and it was about 3700. Found a new one through Porsche. Otherwise the car would have been a lump of metal, they are not rebuildable. I think the new one is the same as that used on the 3.6.

Holy crap RSTarga!! Did you think about just going to an Electromotive system or full EFI? That's a lot of $$ and as these cars get older I bet that $3700 is going to go up as more experience that failure.....
Mine is twin plugged with a crank fire ignition so thankfully I don't have that expense hanging over my head... Bill |
