Chain cover gaskets and torque
On my 964, I just replaced the gaskets on the chain tensioners and the O-rings on the oil bridges. The passenger side tensioner cover was difficult as gravity worked against me. Pro tip: Do that one lying on the floor, not lying on a creeper. You can apply more pressure to the cover without sliding to the side and dropping everything on the floor that way.
I have run into a couple of torque specs that I'm not sure about from the workshop manual in the process. The 10mm nuts that hold the chain tensioner covers in place and the 10mm nuts that hole the oil bridges in place. I torqued them to 7 ft-lb as that seemed to be the standard for items in that vicinity. They are easily accessible to retorque once I get the right specs. Anyone know what they are? The other thing I ran into is the chain housing cover gaskets. I ordered part 964-105-181-01-M260 times two, as it is indicated in the Pelican catalog as working on left side or right side on my car (1990 C4). However, something isn't matching up. The covers are different in one key spot: The lower right corner of the driver-side cover has the stud offset toward the center of the cover so there doesn't need to be a "bump out" on the gasket. The passenger side requires the bump out. The gaskets I received both lack the bump out. Pelican reports the passenger side part number of 964-105-182-00 has been superseded to the driver side one. Do I just mold it around the bump out? Thanks everyone. For those following my progress, this morning has been a productive one. The steering pump is the only really challenging part left to access. I am intimidated about removing the shock to get to it but will look at that later today. For now, off to wash off my heat exchangers. No sense baking old leaked oil after the engine is sealed back up.
