964 Dual Distributor Question see picture

Thanx to all who responded to my earlier post.

Ive posted a picture of my dual distributor removed from the car. The internal rubber drive belt looks to be in good shape.

Concerning lubricating the distributor. Do you just put a few drops of engine oil on both felt pads to lubricate it? I've pulled both felt pads out.

There is a small flat head screw in each distributor shaft beneath the felt plugs(see picture). Do I remove these screws as well to penetrate with a few drops of oil or leave them in?

Is there any parts that need lubricating, cleaning or inspection with it out of the car?

If you've gone to the trouble of pulling the distributor (and possibly not sure of the mileage on the unit) I would definitely replace the belt.

On another forum, I once asked what the purpose of that felt pad was. I've seen them on VW Beetles back then and now on my 993.

The responses I got was that the felt pad keeps the screw underneath it from corroding; another response claimed it kept oil from the shaft from being flung out in to the distributor. I really didn't don't buy either explanations.

What does fail in time are the distributor bearings. Unfortunately, those are not available from Porsche, Bosch or a bearing supply. They are available from a re-builder for a horrendous price (there are three of them) who most likely modifies them as I will be.

If you will be rebuilding your dual distributor, take plenty of digital pics along the way and take note of all shims and locations as well as parts that you remove.

BTW, the internals of your distributor look very good; no corrosion!

Thanx Alex. I guess the bearings may be lubricated from the bottom up from oil pressure in the engine.

I see a couple small holes in the bottom of the distributor shaft above the gear so I think engine oil pressure may work it's way up through those holes. Just a guess I'm not sure.

The bearing at the bottom next to the drive gear is not pressure lubricated. It is splash fed.

The two bearings in the secondary distributor as well as the upper bearing in the primary distributor are angular contact bearings that are greased.

The bearing at the bottom of the primary distributor is of a different design.
