964 antenna amplifier cable
Hi,
I need help to try to clarify the following problem I'm having with my new 90 964 C2. It is clear for me that these cars and with the windshield antenna they have problems with radio reception. This is my case. I've been checking the system I realized that the coaxial cable coming from the antenna amplifier located under the dashboard, apart of the insulation and the shield, has only a single wire but so thin (thickness like a thin hair!!) that I thought there was no conductor inside of the cable. Is this OK? Does someone knows how this cable loOKs like in terms of conductors sizes? Just before starting removing the dashboard and start dismantling a lot of things in order to reach the antenna amplifier, I would like to know if this is correct or not. Thanks RMVP |

THis is normal. A PIA to fix, it's hair thin as you already state.
The radio reception is not that bad if the antenna amp gets 12V power. This is the thin white wire wrapped along the coax. This has to be connected to a +12V output on the head unit. ("Remote" or similar) Cheers, Tore |

Thanks Tore for your support.
A PIA to fix? What do you mean with that? I'm not quite sure if we are speaking about the same wire. The wire I'm talking about is the inner conductor of the coax cable that in fact will connect to the antenna. I was used to see this coax cables with stranded cable or single but with 0,5mm or thicker and never loke a hair. Regarding the other cable that comes along the coax one, in my case is black and i have it connected to the +12v. Even so The radio cannot catch any station. Thanks RMVP

PIA is Pain IN A__
All antennae cable is single strand conductor as you have in diagram above. If you have a radio shack or similar store they have a plug (Motorola Type) that fits the radio and you wont need to solder the strand of wire..it is held to the center pin with a screw As ToreB mentioned Make sure you have the correct power lead going to the antenna amplifier..

Just an FYI.... my radio reception is garbage, so after pulling the radio, to find the antenna wire broke and the black power wire disconnected. I am going to replace the booster (amplifier) and found that Porsche uses the same amp for many cars. The part number is XXX.645.173.01. XXX is the car model.... 993/964 etc. I bought one on Ebay for $12 from a 944S.
