964 decklid wing material and how to repair it?
Hey Pelicans,
I recently bought a 964 Decklid for my 911SC. On the retractable wing portion there are several areas that need to be sanded and filled. Do any of you know what the wing frame portion is made of? I was thinking plastic resin of some kind. Im not sure exactly what to use filler wise on it as well. Short of taking to an autobody shop for an "expert" opinion, I thought I'd ask here first. Also hopefully this info will help someone in the future which is what this is all about. I can provide pictures of the damaged area if need be.

I believe it is a resin.
However are you sure you can fit a 964 lid to an SC? They switched the brackets with the 964 body. Mounting points are different and about 1 " further out per side. The turbo and RSA lid were similar and can be swapped but not sure about the stock tail. I mounted an RSA lid and wing to my 964 C2 which is similar to the older 3.2 carrera lid and needed to fabricate special brackets to make it work. I would verify it fits before attempting to repair.

Cobalt.
They are the same shape and fit physically but you are correct they do need hinge adapters to fit. Fitting is actually the easy part, believe it or not. I'll post pictures in a bit of the damage. I believe I may be able to sand out the area and use a plastic bond to fill it back in. It would just be a matter of reshaping it prepping it for paint after that. Thanks for the reply. |

It's a common issue though, so while filling/sanding may work in the short term it's likely to break again unless you strengthen the area in some way.

Luckily it's not cracked, it actually looks like someone took a cigarette to it (!?!).
I took some 220 grit to the lid frame today and knocked it all down. It is, without a doubt, plastic. I'll fill it with epoxy and resand before priming everything.
