New Fan Preparation?
I have a New in Box fan for my 964 Should I treat it with something, put a protective type (read easy to clean) finish on it or take it right from the box and onto the alt..
Your suggestions/opinions are much appreciated. |
I recently replaced mine and after considering all options installed as is. The critical thing is to have paint covering the magnesium fan as that metal does not do well when exposed. It comes painted silver/grey out of the box.
I considered powder coating it a different color (lots of debate on this over on Rennlist) but didn't. If you do decide to add a coat of something be careful because there is very little clearance between the fan and housing. Some folks that powder coated their fans ran into clearance issues. Good luck! |
Gibbs at minimum; I powdercoated mine.

I powder coated my fan and fan housing. I know they say it weakens the metal a bit. But it looks too good !

I replaced mine about 6 months ago in my C2 (old one was cracked and some blades were badly chipped.).
I went with the Fan as-is out of the factory box. Stock appearance, finish, color is best. Still looks as good, just take a paper towel every so often to clean the dust off the blades. Unless you live in a coastal climate there is nothing to worry about. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1393023892.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1393023989.jpg |
I suppose I will lay a coat of wax on it to make it somewhat easier to clean,
I wasnt going to paint it or powder coat it just wanted some extra protection if at all possible |
Just keep an eye on the edges. Most fans will have chips on the edge of the fan blades due to sucking in debris at high RPMS. If you see a chip touch it up with some Zermatt Silver paint and it won't progress. If you don't the elements will attack the magnesium and the rest of the paint will start to lift and by then it is too late.
