993 Fog Light Switch Access
 

Anyone know the easiest way to remove the fog light switch on the 993? My fog lights work every once in a blue moon and I'm thinking the switch has gone bad. Looks like a real pita and was hoping someone had some ideas. Strange, with the switch pulled the lights won't work. Then they will mysteriously work and the switch will turn them on and off. Next time in the car the lights will be off and the switch has no effect. Must be switch?

I think you pull the clock and reach in behind from there.

Before you go to the trouble of removing the switch, have you checked the relay (R32) for the fog lights? You could swap it with another in the relay panel that you know works just to make sure it isn't a relay shorting out intermittently. I would also make sure the fog lamp fuse (#14) is in good shape.

Thanks for the tips guys. This has been driving me crazy for the past year. I'm too stubborn to have someone else fix the problem. It's gotta be something stupid. Intermittent electrical problems are the worst. I did check the relay. Didn't seem to make a difference when I swapped with another. Maybe I will try again and clean the contacts. I'll keep the switch pulled on and the lights will not work. Then with no rhyme or reason they will come on. I can turn them on and off with the switch for awhile then they will mysteriously turn off. Pulling the switch on and off won't get them to come back on. Very frustrating.

The only other thing I can think of (Other than your theory of a bad switch) is the possibility of a semi-loose connection somewhere that is heating up and disrupting the current flow when it gets hot. I had a 912 that had a poor ground connection on the underside of its fuse block. It would start and run fine, then start losing lights, etc. as I drove. It almost drove me insane before I accidentally laid my hand on the block and felt the heat.

I'm going to check the relay and fuse another time before trying to get that switch out. I'm just guessing it's the switch. The relay and fuse checked out ok before. The switch feels normal, no slop and illuminates like it should. I've never had a switch go bad. Every once in awhile the fogs will work. Otherwise, nothing!!!!!!!!

Interesting. So it looks like he gained access through the radio area. Thanks again for the help. I hope to solve this issue. Sure would be nice to have functioning fogs.
