Ignition Switch Return Spring

I have searched the archive and have not found the answer...

It seems the spring in the ignition switch has failed. When released from the 'start' position the switch does not return to the 'run' position. Where is the return spring located, it does not seem to be located in the electrical subassembly; but, in the mechanical portion.

If it is in the mechanical portion the replacement ignition switch is about $965. Can the mechanical portion be repaired?

I had a problem with the ignition switch in my 993 (993 and 964 switch are the same) and after doing some reading, I came away with the impression that it is the electrical portion of the switch that contains the spring function. My impression may be wrong as it turned out my problem was related to the key rather than the switch, so I was spared the pain of pursuing the switch issue. The good news is that the electrical component is the cheaper component to replace (Approximately $115 from out host). The bad news is that getting to it is a PITA.
