Ignition Problem

1991 C4 Coupe RHD
If I wiggle the key on my C4 with the ignition on, I can make all the dash warning lights go out. This leads me to believe that the occasional cutting out whilst driving is caused by an ignition switch fault. I stuck my head under the dash to see how to remove the electrical switch from the end of the ignition barrel, its held on by two Phillips screws. But how the heck do I get at the upper one which is tight against the bodywork. And if the answer is to remove the whole ignition barrel, how do I do that?

Not too long after I got my 60k mile service done, I started having problems with the engine cutting out momentarily ,for a few minutes after starting... particularly on cold days. Also noticed that the switch had been getting a little harder to turn.

Figured I'd try something crazy, and squirted a couple good shots of silicone spray, right in the key hole.

Not only did it loosen the feel of the switch, after a couple days, the cutting out problem went away. Hasn't recurred in the last three months.

Give it a shot :)

How heavy is your keychain? You shouldn't have more than a couple of keys hanging off that switch, it leads to premature wear.

Rob - My problem seems to be the other way round - the key is too loose.
RSTarga - The only key is the ignition key, plus the imobiliser plug, and a fob.

Still trying to get at that pesky screw.....
