Rim re-use thoughts
I experienced a complete rear tire failure while driving (tread/road part of tire completely separated from inner/outer sidewalls).
As a result, the rim was run in complete contact with road for the duration of trying to get over to the side of the interstate in one peice and not cause a multi-car pileup. The inside top edge of the rim bore the brunt of road contact (see pics). Running my hand over said edge reveals not just rough, but sharp pitting. My thought is to re-use the rim (pending trueness check) and have that edge smoothed so that it won't cut into the bead. The other option of course is to locate a replacement (965.362.128.00 Speedline 9Jx17 ET55 1991). So my question is, when a rim has such damage as described above, is/are there any safety concerns with having the edge smoothed (again pending trueness check) and re-using? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1451844490.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1451844508.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1451844528.jpg |
Take it to a competent wheel repair shop. If the rim is round and not otherwise compromised, they should be able to mount it to a lathe and true the edge.

These are pretty cheap around here. Prolly a lot less than a competent repair. I'd source a new one.

Thanks for the replies!
The rim checked out true and all that was needed was cleaning up the inner side rim edge ($30). Trak Ratt, is there a source for NOS on these rims (I believe mine are the '91-'92 turbo sized, 9" rears, 7.5" fronts)? |
