While You're In There - Engine Out
Hi gents, I have the engine/transaxle out of my '92 C2 to replace third gear in the G50. I've taken all the "tins" surrounding the engine off to be painted, they are in poor shape!
I was wondering what items I should look at replacing while the engine is out. I plan on replacing the housing and camshaft seals for the power steering pump, the belt, and possibly replacing the internal pump seals if I can source them. I've already ordered a plug wire set, going to do the plugs at the same time (and valve lash, of course). Any other wear items or leak points to worry about? Thanks in advance! |

Honestly set a budget and lets us know.
The list is never ending with a set a budget at least you have a limit. |
Add Timing chain cover gaskets. .. and like previously mentioned. The list can grow exponentially.

Fair enough, I'm not looking to spend a fortune, just maybe a couple hundred bucks in maintenance items.

This guy had pretty deep pockets.
Couple of hundred bucks will get you nice cleaning chemicals and plenty of rags You get the idea of the extent of the work. They are almost 30 y/o cars https://rennlist.com/forums/964-forum/898981-964-c4-light-refurb.html |

I stumbled on this thread. What can I say but the Project got away on me :) |
Look closely at your oil lines. I am about to have the 3.3 in my '91 Turbo reinstalled after a complete motor tear down (split case) - everything in the motor itself was in amazing condition at 95,000 miles except for the exhaust valve guides, by the way.
But we replaced a number of oil lines. So give them a thorough inspection. Will be a good time to replace the plugs, adjust valves, do the power steering pump seal and o-ring, check the seals at the "triangle of death" - that's what come to my mind |
If you have over 60,000 miles, replace the O2 sensor. So much easier than with engine in. Wash/wax/detail engine compartment.
