996 with 30K Miles....what does it need?
I'm thinking of getting a 996 with 30K miles and wondering what would be needed maintenance wise.
IMS has not been done, so that's a given. SOP is to do the clutch as well, but seems like at only 30K that's overkill. And then RMS/AOS, again, is 30K miles too soon? Water pump? Anything else that should be done preventively? It's almost 20 years old, so does time outweigh mileage for these items? |
Tires?
While the car has no miles, to speak of, it is, as you say, almost 20 years old. I'd look at a lot of the rubber components.. hoses, belts, bushings, motor mounts etc as (assuming you are buying to use and not flip) will quickly show their age (failure) under use. Clutch could be fine, but its bit of "while you're in there" kinda thing. Some of these might depend on the maintenance documents that come with the car to support keeping or replacing certain items. I have a couple of friends with high mileage (100K) early (99/00) 996s. They have experienced cam chain guide wear/failure. I wonder, despite low mileage, if 20 years of non use, those hard plastic guides could be a preventative replacement item. |
My 28k mi new to me, 2004 996AE under my ownership at 30k I did the following.
WP, coil packs, sparkies, IMSS, Clutch, RMS, AOS, PSS10s, Blackstone annual oil analyst, air filter, trans fluid flush and change, Michelins on 6GT3 wheels, Fisters. A few other mods. All preventively on service. I have owned two 930s over the years as keeper cars and took care of them as such. Both now gone. My AE car is a keeper car too. So she gets all the service as such. She is a keeper until the 997 GT3s get to my price range. Ha Ha... |
Install a full flow oil filter adaptor and filter. These are available from Pelican
