The keys need to be programmed to the car. You’ll need to spend the $400.

Yup, time to bite your lip and go to the dealer, and spend money. Only a PIWIS system can code the car to accept a new key.

Can you get a used key from a wrecking yard for cheap and have a dealer re-program that used key for $150?

No. A new key comes with a little white tag that has the critical coding information that needs to be entered into the PIWIS to get the car to accept the key. Without that tag, the key is a paperweight. And the car is coded to accept the key, not the other way around.

So true. The dealer is the only deal. I bought a Boxster 2010 with only one key and am due at the Scottsdale dealer as they have the key blank, the key fob w/ brain, and the brains to program the damned thing.

If one travels in the wrong car and leaves the Porsche key "safely" in the resort hotel room while headed to and in-house dinner, prepare for major stranded disappointment if housekeeping is in the hall at diner time - and the myriad of scenarios for MIA one's only key are too numerous to list.

I think I am at under 600 bucks for the whole enchilada even with the selling dealer buying the parts at "wholesale" and the programing Porsche dealer at 2x retail for 15 minutes of effort in front of a laptop.. .

A couple years ago, I got a replacement key from Porsche of Marin for about $160 shipped, and a local Indy programmed it to my car for $125.
