99 Carrera engine serial number
Hi,
Just purchased a 99 Carrera with an engine supposedly swapped out in 2008. Can someone decipher the serial number for me? M96 / 01AT66X67208 Thanks in advance! |

The "AT" indicates that it is a remanufactured engine (AT is an abbreviation of Austausch - German for Exchange); 66X says it is a 1999 Carrera engine; the M96/01 says it is 3.4L

I have one of those motors in my 99. It’s been great- only one minor issue after 30k track miles

Thanks for the detail!
Would a 2008 remanufactured 996 done in 2008 have the same IMS risks? Should the IMS be replaced? Last edited by 99Carrera; 05-06-2021 at 05:48 PM.. |

You cannot replace it; any remanufactured engine since 2005 has the oversized IMS bearing that cannot be changed without tearing the engine apart. You could, however, remove the flywheel side seal on the bearing so it is lubricated and cooled by the oil mist inside the engine cases.

Ok... confused now, If it’s the larger bearing, why pop the seal for oil mist. I’ve searched the forum but don’t see any definite info. I may start a new thread. Yup... ANOTHER IMS thread! ;-)

Copy that... Just scheduled a 90k service, clutch r&r, and IMS swap. Thanks again!

Again, your IMS cannot be changed out without a total engine rebuild due to its size (it will not fit through the hole in the engine case); but they can remove the rear seal on the bearing so it can lubricate and cool. We have maybe 100 cars running this way, never had one fail.

The shop that did the PPI has quoted $2500 to replace it. I assume they know the engine spec, but will follow up with them to confirm. Will reply with their response. Thanks for the heads up.
