996 engine rebuild

Hi all I'm looking at a high mileage 996(110,000), because everybody says that they are prone to engine failure how much is a new engine/ or rebuild? I've tried to search this but never really found anything. Maybe I'm bad at search. The other thing I've seen people talk about is like a buyers guide. People say there are some good ones on rennlist, but I never seem to find them. Does anyone have any links. Are there any other things to watch out for?

A factory 3.4 is over $11K with a rebuildable core exchange, over $13K without a good core. And that comes with a 2 year warranty. You can't get a rebuild done by a reputable shop with a similar warranty for less than that.

The big failures with these engines usually destroy so many expensive parts that it's just cheaper to buy a new engine than rebuild.

You need to read the Excellence Tech Forum article "M96: Past, Present, and Future", in the December 2008 edition. It was followed by a shorter Tech Notes response to a reader question titled M96 Engine Design in the May 2009 edition. These two articles will answer all of your questions.

I just did a quick search on eBay and there were no 996 engines for sale right now. There were a couple of 997 ones tho. Would a 997 engine fit in a 996?

It depends on your definition of "fit" . . . specifically, how much are you willing to pay to make it work. Fit is generally not an issue; it's the peripherals that make it interesting.

I am interested in this also--too make it simpler-- lets presume an 02 996 with tip . would that be a bolt in deal. What would need to be changed? Would taht apply to a 6 speed as well?

Have you talked to the folks at Flat6Innovations? http://www.flat6innovations.com/home

They can rebuild your motor...bigger...stronger...faster...but I'm not sure on pricing. I know Boxsters can be had for the range you mention. Can't be that much more for 911s?

In answering the 997 engine into a 996..... the electronics is the expensive part. The 997 are egas meaning electronic gas petal. So if you are already egas it might be worth looking into further. Engine plus electronics to make it work means bigger bucks. I'm a lite weight so I went for a factory rebuild swap on my 99 Cabrio. Good luck!

My presumption is that e gas already exists so it is a question of the rest of compatibility.

With the price of 996's dropping through the floor, it would be my recommendation that you look for a lower mileage and new 996. I just picked up an '06 997 with 27K miles for under $42K and saw A BUNCH of nice late model 996's (02-04) for between 20-35K.

TRUST me when I tell you you want a newer car that hasn't been driven by the devil. When you start paying someone else to work on these cars, you are financing their childrens college education at 75-$95 per hour.

If you are hell bend on an older 1st Gen 996, try LA Porsche Dismantler at http://www.ladismantler.com/index.php?page=cat_list&cl=14&cat=2913 they are the largest source of Used Porsche Parts on the Web.

Good Luck....

J
