Need Help with a measurement!!!
 

Hi,
After trying to reach a couple people with 996 porsches in my city to go take the measurement myself and no success, I hoped to have more luck with you guys on the Forum.

I am doing a project on a porsche and need to know the clearance between the trany and the crossmember when the motor is mounted.

If someone had the chance to take this measurement for me I would greatly appreciate it.

Please find attached a picture of the measurement i'm talking about.

Do you have a jack to put on the trans when mating the engine to it? A jack will let you adjust when working it in.

I'm actually puting another engine (electric) Hope you guys forgive me!!!! :)

And I forgot to measure before removing the old one. The new motor support will hold the trany in place and therefore I need to make know the old location of the trany.

I am not 100% sure how precise it needs to be, but I would suppose within a half an inch.

Mine looks like 1 & 1/4 inch, between the bottom of transmission and top of cross member.

1-1/4, that seems really big, did you take the measure as shown on the picture on the first post or like the one below? behind the crossmember?

I tried putting the trany with a space of 1-1/4, but the surface where the trany and the motor bolt together seems to be to much of an angle.
On the picture, I have about 1/2 cleareance. It whats seems the best when I align the surface with the original bracket on the rear that holds the entire original motor. (See pic2)

Actually got underneath it and it's a 1/2 inch.

I'll go with 1/2in and hopefully evrything should be ok. I'll post more pictures on the forum when the project is finished.

On the Boxster engine swaps, you need to lower the engine down a 1/2 inch and those work fine, so if you're close, there shouldn't be any major problems.

Is it a geared down electric motor for better power from it?

wow looks like a cool project but you must be putting batterys in the trunk so um where you going to put tent an sleeping bag an fishing rod an um blonde lol

um thats a mockup hey those joints dont look welded

after looking at the pics i dont really get the engine mount for torque moment of electric engine but you must have really thought it out would really like to hear your thoughts on the design

To reply to the first question of pacific996, it's not a geared down motor. It's a motor with similar torque than the original 996. It has approx 400Nm of torque. and 170KW of peak power. I'm using the original transmission to have the same torque at the wheels.

For the other questions from Tutashen:
Yes it's tac welded in place. I'll leave the full welds to a professional that has a TIG to do a perfect job. These welds are so important.

For the batteries, i'll be using lithium so not so much weight and volume. Like you said part of the trunk will be used for batteries but just half. For me the most important wast that the car remained a four seater. The remaning of the batteries will be in the motor compartiment and maybe a little were the gas tank used to be.

For your last question about the torque of the motor:
Take a look at the video on this page of my blog, it's the FEM analysis of the deformation of the support (scaled to be seen on the vid):

The support I made doesn't take the torque of the motor, it actually takes the torque of the wheels. Only the thick aluminium plate takes the torque of the motor.

Hows your project going,keep us updated k:) i'm thinking its standard tranny are you using some kind of regenerative engine brake for shifting ? from the looks of your controller it can do anything! :)
