Most economical way to get a louder exhaust sound.

I'm a little disappointed by the exhaust sound on my stock '99 996. I only got the car a few months ago and I love the car and the performance. However the exhaust sound simply doesn't do the car justice and based on all the forum topics related to this it seems to be a common observation. I live on a Caribbean Island, and am lucky to drive 20 miles a day, so I don't really want to do the full $5000 exhaust replacement job. Instead I was thinking of getting the Fister modified muffles along with an air intake kit. Is this combination likely to give me a nice noise boost and if not what else should I consider? Thanks.

Fabspeed generally gives you pretty good bang for your buck at about $2K. But there is a post for a used set on Rennlist for $500.
Buy the used set and spend the xtra $ saved on a Softronics flash.
For a total of $1400 you'll end up with both better sound and improved performance.

The "Hack".....most commonly known as the Gundo Hack cost me $150 at a local muffler shop

"The Hack" is actually the Porsche original Sport Muffler design before the PSE was made available with a cool in-dash selector switch with gate.

Instead of going with a louder exhaust which will make everybody unhappy, why not go with a louder Air Filter box, as it is done in the 997 Type S Porsche? Just open a small round opening in your Air Filter box, _preferably towards the inside of the car, and your ears will be in heaven. Check the design of the 997 Type S air filter box and you will understand immediately.

As a 997 Type S owner, I love that feature.

You don't necessarily need an "S" to do that, people with all models N/A Porsche cars have been doing that since 1999 production. It's a snorkel effect but still not as aggressive sounding as the Sport Exhaust modification IMO.

What????? boy that exhaust is loud!

I have an 02 Carrera Cab and I too, long for the HMMmmmmm so MY plan is to do a "labodomy" on the muffler. I'm going to take it down.......cut a hole in the top rear of the muffler.....reach in and pull out anything "quiet" looking, and re-weld the access hole shut. I'll be doing this in the next two weeks so I'll let you know how I make out. Til then, do like the olden days.....get some balloons.....blow em up (not full), and tie em to the undercarriage so that they hit against the spokes of the rims and as you go faster........they get louder.

Fran,

There is a "capped" hole on the muffler, you can open that up and hook it up to the exhaust port and this will give you the original factory "Sport Design" modification.

Good luck,

Here is a picture showing the upper capped off section of the muffler. You need to run a tube from that hole and merge the pipe with the middle pipe right before the clamp.

Any exhaust shop can do this for under $100.

Is this the same for any 996? I have a 2000 C2 that I'm interested in doing this to if it's possible. Thanks!

Pre 2002 mufflers will be much quieter with the PSE hack than post 2002.
These are 2002 on, you can tell by the "flex" part onthe inlets.

These are with the PSE mod

This will not give much if any improvement on the older mufflers.
There is another mod with a ~1.5" "J" pipe between the inlet and outlet that works well on the older style mufflers. Look at these.
