996 track car candidate...are there preferred years?

Hi...i am currently a 911/944 owner. During my travels across the interwebs I have seen several 996's at prices that I would consider them to be track car candidates. On that note, are there preferred years for this type of project? Are the '99's an inferior platform compared to an '03? And as long as you are replying, just what is the lowest price you have seen for a road-worthy 996 change hands?
