Converting a 996 turbo with tiptronic to manual.

Does anybody know if it's possible to convert from tiptronic to a manual gearbox?

Can it be done? Yes. Do you really want to do it? Probably not.

It is one Hell of a lot of work, you need to buy a lot of expensive parts (new master cylinder, clutch hydraulics and lines, the proper gear box, shifter, shifter cables, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, interior stuff like the console trim and new clutch and brake pedals, etc., etc.); the car's DME will be looking for the Tip computer and not finding it, you will need to drop the engine and just about disassemble the car, etc.

And when you are all done, you will have a car with a diminished resale value, so you will never recover your outlay. You need to step back and ask yourself if the view is really worth the climb.............

There is always another car with a 6 speed.

Hi. I would like to revive this thread.
5 years late the price difference between the manual and tiptronic has widened significantly.
Where I live for similar mileage the price difference is now almost double. I am offered about $35-40k for my tiptronic with 44000km while a similar mileage manual car sells for $60-70k. So not the manual conversion is more than cost effective.
I have done automatic to manual conversions on 944s in the past, including wiring harness change, so labor cost will be almost O. I have found a 2001 996C4 parts car for about $4k.
Questions are: Are the C4 and turbo wiring harnesses the same? Is the C4 transmission strong enough for the turbo?

The view still isn't worth the climb, and you will not realize the value of a factory manual car as the car's VIN will always give it away as being a "Frankenstein".

C4 is not the same, you would need a C4S which is basically the same car but not sure if it is 100% the same gearbox. Best bet would be to call a dismantler and see if they could put together a package for you as plenty of turbos get parted out~
I would say you are looking at about $10K+ give or take in parts, and a lot of work so I hope you're handy, if not add another $3K+ in labor, probably more.
If it is done right it will increase the cars value, being a converted car some people will probably poo poo on it but whatever.

If I could sell my car for a reasonable price I wouldn’t blind at putting $10-20k in the pot. But $30-40k nah. If that’s the case then put another $30k and get a GT2.
I’m not a afraid of big projects. I’ve restored and several pre-90s P-cars alone in my driveway.
If providence really mattered manually converted 911s, 914 and 928s would be worthless.

I think you meant "provenance", and it does matter; why spend top dollar for a "put together" when there are plenty of originals still running around..................
