Life expectancy of a Fire System

I was wondering how often you should replace your fire system. I have a 5lb safety devices halogen system that has never been discharged in four years. The guage is still in the middle of the green but the age concerns me. Should I replace it ? and then of course any recommendations.

Cheers,
David

Halon or other similar systems such as Haltron, SHOULD BE good for 12 years without servicing. I say should be, because that is the standard set by NFPA for fixed facility systems and hand held Halon extinguishers.

But check the gauge on the bottle regularly and give your system a thorough look-over once in a while.

Hi, David,

The gauges on these things seldom malfunction, but if there is any doubt, check it the "good-old-fashioned -way" : disconnect the trigger cable, remove it from the holder bracket, and shake it! Heavy? Feel contents?? Then it is still good to go.

Best,

If you have a non-Halon device... I understand that the "Stuff" packs on one side over time and via bumps of the car....and will be prone to plug...like an old clump of baking soda. Suggestion is to "rotate" your fire bottle once in a while...

Apex Performance sells a field-rechargeable system from FireCharger. I'm about to install it in the track beast. The tank is loaded with an aqueous film foaming agent, which is sealed at atmospheric pressure and fired by releasing a CO2 cannister into the fire bottle.

Details at http://www.apexperformance.net/new_page_2.htm

Seems a good idea in principle in that the bottle is only under pressure when the system is fired.
