Source for plastic Dry Breaks???

Guys,

I posted this also on the general 911BBS.

Any leads on "affordable" sources for plastic dry-breaks? See pic attached for an example of what I'm looking for.

Thanks, Juan

You bet, Juan

As I recall, that is "CPC" embossed on the metal release tabs. An internet search should produce "Cold Products Corp" or something like that. That should lead to "U.S. Plastics Corp." or something like that. They sell exactly what is pictured, and they not expensive (at least when compared with the products which incorporate these double dry break fittings I suspect you wish to duplicate). I worked my way through their extensive on-line catalog and found the male and femal parts I wanted (I messed up on one of them because I didn't understand which were which, but they took them back and sent me what I needed - some with male IPT threaded ends). Sure cuts down on the cost of a cool tank (along with the West Marine pump, the Coleman cooler, and a couple of bucks worth of standard plastic plumbing fittings).

US Plastics now sends me their large catalog a couple of times per year!

Now if only I could find a source for the nifty dual tube insulated foam tube covering, I could duplicate all but the shirt.

I don't know how cross-posting works, so if this reply is useful perhaps you could post it to the other list.

Walt,

Thanks much. I actually have a cooling system already (the expensive one), I'm trying to prepare a drybreak system for my driver hydration layout. I really can't be biting on the valve for an hour without causing major distraction + pain.

Again, thanks a bunch. On the double hoses, I've only seen the factory ones.....

Cheers, Juan

Did you notice that last weekend a racer in some professional series thought he was pressing his radio button (no doubt on his wheel) but instead pressed his hydration button (that system must have a pump in it)? However, he did not have the end of the tube in his mouth since he planned on talking (or at least wasn't planning on drinking), so he sprayed the inside of his helmet with water, causing him some momentary grief, steering the car with his knees, and other gyrations. I think this happened during a full course yellow, saving his bacon.

Wow, hopefully he was drinking h2o and not gatorade (can you imagine the mess).

A low pressure pump would work. I tried a washer pump and it would choke you....

Hey Walt, I knew someone out there would have done this....Could you provide a pic and any other sources/part #'s you may have used? A couple hundred for a cooler has had me shaking my head for awhile now! Thanks!

Walt,

I checked my hoses really carefully, there are no markings that I could find. Sorry.......

I haven't seen a dual tube model from them online, but check out Camelbak for the insulated line...

I did a little digging -- even though I recently coughed up the bucks for the overpriced cooler-with-a-fishtank-pump setup.

CPC is Colder Products Company, out of St. Paul, MN.

Specifically, it looks like this product line.

I don't know if there's a way to buy their products resale, but the web site does let you find a local sales rep based on your zip code. It looks like the fittings sell 25 to a bag. We could conceivably put together a group to go in on a bag each of male and female fittings.

Then there's the 12V pump, the plastic tubing, and way of bonding the thin tubing to a shirt. Stitching seems tedius. I wonder if there's a silicone-like adhesive or flexible epoxy that would hold up over time?

More digging. Walt had it right. You can buy them individually from US Plastics right here.

The shirts are available seperately for about $100. Seems money well spent.

Brian

I am barely digital, and write from the office. What happened is my wife bought the whole system plus an extra T shirt witht ubes. I looked at it and the price and thought I could make the same for not much money. A friend had made one, but after his wife valiently tried to sew tubing to a T shirt gave up on that part and just bought the T. So I knew it could be done even before we got the full commercial unit.

Now the challenge was one for me.

I bought the exact same Coleman cooler (since I wanted an exact, can't tell the difference without looking at the past-on labels, duplicate) from some internet source. But any cooler you'd fancy would do fine. I could tell from looking that the pump was a marine sump pump, and lo and behold West Marine sells the exact pump - the smallest in their line and I forget the brand, but no matter. The hard plastic tubing was that beige small plumbing pipe - 3/8" maybe?. I assembled a suitable trove of 90 degree elbows and internal threaded end fittings, and a small piece of tubing to serve as a coupler between the plastic piping and the outlet tube for the pump - all to mate with the two critical female CPC double dry break bits. Then it was to work drilling holes, gluing pipe together, epoxying things in the holes, and whatnot (if you put the holes up toward the top like the commercial job does your watertightness is less important), and epoxying the bottom of the pump in place. A little wire and some more polarized two wire connectors (trailer connectors from local hardware store) allowed me to match up the way both our coolers connect in both of our race cars.

While I was fussing about not finding the insulation for the connecting tubing my wife just bought a second of those, as she had the second T shirt.

The keys to this are those nifty CPC fittings, and the little marine sump pump.

$16.99 for the pump from West Marine. I believe it's the 360 gph model (West Marine part 375188, Rule Mfg part 24) on this page.

Someone should put together a parts list and a step-by-step tech article for this.

How about a pitot tube stuck into the airstream to pressurize the bottle instead of a pump?

I only drink on the straights. . . .

Great, the new track-flavored hydration system. Bet that would be some yummy water!

I picked up the pump today at a local Bass Pro Shops, just in case any of you have one of those nearby. I assume most boat shops will carry something similar.
