Front Oil Tank Solutions ?
I want to mount a front oil tank in the smugglers box on my RSR racecar. The entire car is disassembled right now so tis the time to do it.
I DID try searching the archives, but came up short. So... what solutions do folks know of? The car already has a front cooler, but it honestly looks pretty dang small for the job to me. There is no engine oil cooler nor an oil thermostat. Is this ok???? Dave White swears its the best way... I am hoping this mod wont bankrupt me! Any suggestions on where to get an oil tank and all the fittings and lines I will need is greatly appreciated!

Get a 16 quart tank similar to this. Used on alot of stock cars. Can get them at BSRProducts.com Peterson, or Patterson makes them... I've got one in my car. Brian

Brian,
That looks pretty good. I went to BSR products webpage and found the Patterson oil tanks. The 4 gallon tank runs $379. IN my price range. How did you get the lines made to fit properly? How did you figure out the plumbing? Did the tank come with any instructions? Did it fit into the smugglers box ok or did it take lots of cutting and welding? THANKS!

I don't really know. The previous owner of the chassis had installed the tank, and lines.
But my whole system holds 20 qts, between the engine sump, lines, tank, oil coolers, so I rarely have an issue with high oil temps. Brian

Was your smugglers box cut up or modified for the tank to fit? Any more detailed pics of the install?

The other/cheaper alternative is to modify your oiltank with baffles...

The SRP solution is EXPENSIVE! I was hoping to move the tank to the front without it costing $2K or more.
Chris..... are you teasing us or what?

Terry,
Smart Racing does this, but in addition they add some capacity to the tank. ($400). I decided that while the added capacity was nice, as long as your oil temps are okay, there's no need for it. The baffle here keeps the oil from sloshing away from the pickup and hence the 0 pressure drops during heavy deccel. The price is what spurred me into doing this. Since then I've done about 6 tanks for various folks with good result. ($150) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=190933&highlight=tank+baffle

A friend of mine and I made two oil tanks for our 911s. We sized them to fit in the smugglers box with no cutting.
cost of the fittings was minimal, throw in some of our own labor.. Here one in my car, still a work in progress. ![]() before installation

Tim,
I'd rethink the mounting in that last photograph. I'm afriad that the fittings might abrade (sp?) your couch and eventually wear through...

TimT,
Thats looks great! Do you have any specs for that? I have a really good local machine shop and if I had some basic specs or plans I bet they could whip me one out for cheaper than what SRP charges! Heck, I may even attempt it myself. I have no experience welding aluminum but my welder will do it with different gas and rod. Might just give it a try! Do the pipes for the oil line attachments run to the bottom of the tank? If you have any diagrams or specs.... please post!

Ill see if i can find the sketches I made of the tank. If I cant find the sketches the rough dimensions are pretty obvious.
The oil out is a -16 on mine and a -20 on the other tank the oil out is about an inch above the bottom of the tank.. Oil goes in the top of the tank.. drains through some baffles to de-aerate, then returns to the engine. Sorry to be so vague

Cant find the sketch, figures... so I put a tape on the tank, its 8X9X20 you can figure out the box out over the steering rack pretty easily.
I ran the feed oil line up through the passenger side heating duct. The return goes right down the center of where a passenger would sit

I'll put up some pics of the same tank that Tim T is talking about very soon (Monday or Tueday) I have been running "our" front mounted tank for a few years now with now problems and the cost of the total install is a bit lower than 2k. It has a -20 feed to the engine, (Tim Chose -16) my install is in a turbo car so I have a few more fittings welded on top. Three -16s and one -12 for the turbo oil return.
