Recommendations for a street/track tire.

I'm looking for a tire similar to Falken Azenis or Kuhmo MX in 16" sizes. Unfortunatelty neither of those two tires have anything bigger than 225 in 16" and I would like to put a 245 on the rear.

The Hankook R-S2 Z212 comes in the sizes I want. The seem to be sticky, but I've heard they can overheat? Anyone have any experience/opinions on these?

Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Thanks.

Toyo RA1 if you're interested in great track times. The BFGoodrich g-force TA KD if longevity is more important.

I bought the Hankooks. They rock!

I'm running 205/55 & 225/50 16". I have two track days under them. Sticks better than the MX, but does tend to get greasy a touch quicker. The tires were really inexpensive. I have about $400 invested, including mounting and balancing. They look like they'll last 14 track days or so.

Bottom line: I'd definitely buy them again.

Some people are running the Yokohoma Advan's in our region...They seem to like them quite a bit...I would vote for the RA1's....

RA1's grip..no heat cycling...but they will only last around 3K mileages depending on how much track use you put on them...can't be sticky with long treadwear....you need to find out what you really want to do...track, or street. most of us track with RA1, and us and hard compound for street...

It will be mostly for track use. I just got a 911 as a track car and not sure I want to go to a R-compound just yet. I think I want to start out with a grippy street tire. Once I get some events in the 911 under my belt I'll probably get RA-1's or MPSC's and keep the street tires as rain tires.

Buy the Hankooks. They're inexpensive enough that if you don't like them, you don't buy them again. It's that simple.

Personally, I think they're great. But then I don't mind running a couple seconds slower. The cost savings over 'R' tires allows me to run quite a few more events. (And that's just not a noobie opinion. I've been doing DEs for about ten years. From Corvettes to Miatas. From 'R' tire to street tires.)

Rob, are you going to the Turn1 event on Nov 10-11? I'm planning on going.

I was going to take the car apart to do some work. But maybe I'll wait until after the T-1 event.

My car had the BFG on it when I bought it in June. I have been trying to find someone who still sells them. I even e-mailed BFG to ask if they are still making them and according to them they are. I checked Tire Rack and several other vendors and no one seem to have them or tell me when they will be available.

I use the same RA-1 on the street, track and Auto-x...don't bother with swapping. Granted I don't do a lot of street driving, but a set still last me a year (albeit a short year in northern indiana). They do perform better once the tread wears down, but I don't shave so that my street use is ok.... even unshaved they still gave me 5 auto-x class wins (2 FTDs) this year.

The RA1's are not especially pleasant as a street tire (loud and abrupt, when cold). But in this category, there's no beating them.

Cool. I'm sending in my registration tomorrow. Are you an instructor?

Yeah, I’m an instructor. NASA, T-1, BMW CCA, PCA National (yada, yada, yada ) T-1 will do roll-call for instructors in another week or so . If you'd like me to be your instructor, simply note it somewhere on your Turn-1 registration. My name is Robert Gimmi. They know me very well (and I know CMP very well).

Hope to see you at the track.
