Take cover!

Wheel weights! yes wheel weights they're flying off left and right

At first I figured that I must have had some grease or oil on the rims - but no...after my third failed attempt (and now fourth trip to the local tire shop) I can see that both the foam adhesive of the weights themselves as well as the automotive duct tape is simply melting.

Ok - I'd been struggling with overcooked brakes this year which lead me to a new pad - HAWK HT10, (which by the way seem to be surviving the heat great!) so got that under control but now my guess is that my new higher brake heat threshold is turning my wheel weights to jelly! Can this be? What am I doing wrong?

I'm now fortifying my tape job with a scotch foil product rather than "duct tape" but I am not so confident....won't the adhesive melt just the same?

FYI my 15" rims do end up pretty close to the rotors.....

Don

Normal duct tape is not appropriate due to the heat, as you have seen. You need the gray MIL spec tape or HVAC metal tape. You may even need to double the HVAC tape.

Do a search. This has been covered on the BBS before and people (me included) posted specific tape types and where to get it. I get mine at McMaster-Carr.

Brake heat is obviously your problem. I used to have this problem too. Friends would ask me what the heck is up, they have no problems. So, while the tape is a good idea, braking technique and brake cooling are something you need to look at too!
