I have never doubted from the beginning that the Cayenne will be one impressive performing SUV/hybrid/whatever vehicle, I just doubt the utility and demand for it past the next few weeks. Remember, every new car that is at all unique creates a big buzz right off the bat, then dies down pretty quickly. We live in the most intense consumer society ever, there has never been more cool stuff to spend your $$ on if you have it, I'll be surprised if anyone is even talking about this thing a month or two from now. :cool:

Buy a new Suburban/YukonXL with a 496 in it that can tow 12000 pounds...AND a 993....for the price of a Cayenne.

I'm afraid I will never be able to do that, because I'm not the slightest bit interested in doing so. I'm with yelcab1 - there is simply no place for a vehicle of those dimensions and specifications (an SUV) in my life. My emotional response to it is valid, and I honor it. I don't need any facts to establish that, from my point of view, the Cayenne is a piece of *****. It is by design and intent so similar to so many other vehicles on the road - what a boring, conformist choice! To me it represents a transparent and totally disingenuous attempt on the part of Porsche to make a buck. And in being just that kind of exercise in cynicism, it is an anti-emotional vehicle. I'm an emotional guy. We don't mix. So, all due respect to those with differing opinions, my opinion is this: y'all can take all the engineering, all the "performance," all the facts, all the bozo gauche plastic, navigation systems and integrated gauge units, stuff em in the back of that POS and roll the whole mess over a bridge guardrail. Same goes for the BMW, the Merc & the Lexus. |

So Basically if it is not something that fits into your life its a POS. Don't like it, I dont care for it either. But calling it a POS for that reason is a little silly. |

To each his own. There is, of course, a reason we have a term for close-minded individuals. The Cayenne is not for me - my only vehicle is a 911 - but the people that want them are perfectly welcome to support Porsche's return to racing, in my humble opinion. |
Interesting that the deer vs. Durango photo popped up. That animal vs. vehicle collision happened just this past fall here in Minneapolis. The deer found itself wandering on a freeway over pass. After being startled by a passing car it jumped off the over pass! It never did hit the ground. It went through the windshield of a 70 mph Durango before it landed. The driver was uninjured but scared out of his wits. Luck for him he was in an SUV or he may not have made it.

On the other topic here - hitting animals - I gotta tell a little story. When I got my topend rebuilt a couple years ago, my car was out of commission for four months or something horrible like that. You know how excited I was the day I got it back. At twilight on the way home from the shop I took it for a little spin in the hills. On my gleeful, 70 mph way around a big sweeper, a deer jumped out from behind some trees right in front of me. No time at all. BAMM!! Back in the shop for three weeks. But the 911 did hold up surprisingly well to the collision. I needed a new hood and a new headlight. And someone had to wash the deer poo off the roof as well. Cheers, |
For those of you NJ folks, there's a whole corral of Cayenne's at the Short Hills mall (of course), it was my first time seeing one up close, wouldn't get one but not so bad looking.....

I actually think for the type of vehicle, Porsche nailed it. They did their research and found out that what, 75% of those with 911's also had an SUV in their garage.
They are just hedging their bets against the fickle sports car market. Styling wise I think it could use some help but it does look better in person than in the photos. Probably the average person on this board would not buy one - But for the person that wants an SUV and wants the best there is, The Porsche may fit the bill. |
