Headin' for the bargain bin

From www.autoextremist.com:

[three thumbs down to] Porsche. As was reported in Automotive News this week, if eBay is any sort of barometer, the Cayenne is in trouble. The eBay website has become a hotbed of buying and selling for all of the "first-on-the-block" lemmings who want a crack at the latest and greatest cars, either before or right when they first come out. Dealers have mined this phenomenon quite skillfully by putting hard-to-come-by cars on the website, bidding up prices way over sticker. Funny thing is, the Cayenne SUV has been its own version of the Titanic right out of the gate - at least when it comes to the eBay bazaar. Buyers wouldn't even bid near the sticker price for any of the Cayennes on the site. A Canadian dealer tried to get $5,000 over sticker for a Cayenne Turbo and didn't receive one bid. And a Texas dealer couldn't even get sticker for an S model, so the bidding ended with it going unsold. As Peter said many times before over the last three-and-one-half years, "The Cayenne is the wrong vehicle at the wrong time from the wrong car company." And judging by the soaring gas prices and plunging SUV sales, his words ring more prophetic than ever. Still convinced the Cayenne will be successful, Wendelin? You and your loyalists are probably the only ones left convinced of that.

A friend of mine is an independent trader. A few days ago he had a Cayenne available at list with no one interested. He also had a fully loaded 996 and two X5s which he was discounting, again no one interested. I'd guess the Cayenne is going to depreciate like a brick once the new car fever fizzles out.

So, how hard is it to get out of a lease? How do you early terminate a leased vehicle?

Rob McKibbon 03-22-2003 09:42 PM

Ah, yes, the infamous lease option. Which I refer to as the Never, Never , Never plan.

You'll never own it
You'll never pay it off
You'll never have any equity

A lease is a contract. In your contract it will state the termination agreement. I believe at this point, it's best to just drive it until the lease runs out? Although, not an expert in this field by any means.

Well, the Porsche dealer here in Victoria has 3 pre-sold plus a black Turbo in the showroom that sold on Friday. I took out the last Cayenne S in his stock (he's keeping it for himself) yesterday afternoon and have to say that I couldn't have attracted more attention if I had been cruising down the road naked on top of a tank! Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, did the rubberneck jawdrop stare as I rolled by in the thing. I haven't had that kind of attention since I drove my 912 around missing the left front fender... :D

Here's what I think...

This makes a great used car. If I had the cash, and there are no horrid recalls, I'd be the proud owner of a pepper truck just because it is sooooooooooo eccentric as far as Porsches go.

Make mine black. And if I can geta classy trailer to tow a black 964 to the races so much the better.
