Cayenne drive line shudder
 

While driving our ‘08 base Cayenne, it suddenly began to shudder, fairly violently. It feels like it is coming from the right rear but it is hard to pinpoint. It starts at about 20mph. However, if I take it out of gear it almost completely disappears. Nothing is visibly out of sorts and everything is tight (wheels won’t wobble, half-shafts feel normal, etc.). Has anyone had this issue before? If so, what was the cause?

center drive shaft bearing. (actually the rubber mount around the bearing.)

Question; the Cayenne is about 8 miles from the house, can I drive it home (carefully) or do I need to tow it?

I would drive it, shifting into neutral when possible.

Or I might get MacGeiver on it where it sits... One guy zip-tied some rubber tube sections to fill the gap - think zip-tie thru a piece of say fat-wall fuel line, then wrapped around the outer ring.

The repair is complete using the “Jimmy” method. Nine one inch sections of 5/8” OD heater hose and a coke can to slide it on with. Took it for a ride and no vibration!!! Thanks for the advice.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1561771258.jpg

If you replace it get the lifetime one from vertex. I replaced mine with a rebuilt driveshaft unit and it gave up in a year I then used the lifetime one and it is still in the car after almost 100K miles

Oh Yes, We must all do this upgrade...I did my in December 2016. It took me almost +2.5 hrs to complete, not 1hr as advertised. Well worth it. No more noise or shuddering especially during hard acceleration.The EPS/Vertex Intermediate Shaft Support Bearing upgrade is "Peace of Mind" and Lifetime.

My 2004 CTT is well north of 100K mi and I have not replaced this item. Since I may not get a lot of notice when the time comes, I have a question (based on the posts here). Is the recommended fix here the "Porsche Cayenne Turbo Cayenne Updated Drive Shaft W/ EPS Bearing Support" that comes complete with driveshaft and support?

Replacing the drive shaft can be a real PITA (removal). And is costly shipping, and is throwing away quite a lot just for a new rubber bumper.

Replacing only the bearing and mount is what I did.

I don't care for the inelegance of the clamping replacement. --yes, I see the “Jimmy” method as being more elegant as it doesn't require using a hack-saw and over $400.
