cayenne = tourareg?
 

OK, I'm pretty sold on the cayenne, ever since I first set eyes on one in Paris last April...

I went into the local dealer and climbed over and under the ones on the showroom floor and they seem like the real deal.

What concerned me is that the Porsche / VW dealer in Victoria has 3 of them lined up next to a Tourareg and I couldn't get over the sheet metal cominalities - the bottom 2/3 of the sheet metal is almost identical (the rear bumper is different) but the lower parts of the doors and fenders look identical.

The front suspension looks pretty much the same (at least it did in the dark at 11:00 oclock at night last sunday night), the rear suspension looks different tho.

What other cominalities are there? Driveline, suspension etc?

Would I be better waiting for the 300HP v10 diesel tourareg VW is putting out later this year or shelling out $60 - 70k+ for the 240HP Cayenne?

They are developed side by side. If you are not going for the Turbo, I would seriously consider the VW

You need to drive both. While jointly developed, they are entirely different vehicles. The Toureg was designed as and drives like a typical heavy SUV, albiet a very high quality SUV. The Cayenne is an entirely different animal. Horsepower is 340 (not 240) for the S. It is very quick. The handling and braking are outstanding. It 'feels' like it weighs 1500 pounds less than it does - a tribute to Porsche suspension/steering engineers. You will immediately know you are driving a Porsche. If you're looking for an SUV, buy the VW. If you need something more fun, buy the Porsche!

I have to agree with cegerer. Most of the SUVs, including the Toureg, are very nice and civil these days. The P car is, as always, quite a different and better beast though. You do need to drive one to see.

I'd go with the VW. Then again, I actually take my Land Rover off-road. Go figure!

Nice to know that Touareg's can perform almost as well as Cayennes. Don't assume that all Cayenne owners drive back and forth to the country club.

Just so you know, there were four of us off-roading in North Central Texas last November. All four were Cayenne S models. And those without PASM did just fine off-road as well as on-road!

Touareg??? Look closer, its an allroad! Nice shot of the Cayenne. I just went to look at the Turbo. Very impressed, just am too much against the SUV market to buy one. I have to applaud Porsche for bringing in such a great SUV though, and hope they continue on their upward trend...we don't want VW buying them too!

I looked at the tourareg before we bought the cayenne and was impressed by it. The cayenne was a better fit for my wife and I. She was much more comfortable with the way the cayenne drove compared to the tourareg, I too was more impressed with the cayennes handling. We pull a heavy sailboat with the car and it is best towing vehicle we have ever owned. We also liked the interior finnish in the cayenne better. Plus you can get three car seats in the back which we needed. The cayenne was a replacement for a lexus suv. We also own a 911 and a 944 and are very pleased with the car so far.

BTW cegerer, white looks fantastic on the Cayenne. Everyone there made this comment. Our factory tour guide said only U.S. and Mid East buyers order in white, never Europeans. White is not a big color for cars over here.

George, I initially was going to buy silver. I didn't think white looked good in photos I had seen. But a deal came up on the white one, so I bought it. When I saw white in person, I loved it. I really think the Cayenne looks best in lighter colors. -- Curt
