PORSCHE MAY USE TOYOTA HYBRID SYSTEM IN CAYENNE
The electric drivetrain for Toyota Motor Corp.’s upcoming Lexus RX 400h hybrid SUV also may be used in a hybrid version of Porsche AG’s Cayenne SUV, reports Automobilwoche. If approved, the vehicle would be sold in the U.S. and Europe, according to the German publication. It says Porsche currently is studying the feasibility of offering the hybrid model as a way to boost fuel economy and reduce tailpipe emissions. The automaker has previously indicated it wouldn’t offer a diesel engine in the Cayenne, so it needs another high-efficiency powertrain to meet upcoming U.S. and European emission standards. Based upon the Lexus RX 330, the 400h is due to hit U.S. showrooms late this year. Toyota already licenses its hybrid technology to Nissan Motor Co. Ford Motor Co. also uses some Toyota-based components in its Escape hybrid. |
