Need info on 04 Cayenne S brake job...
 
I'm new for this forum, but I bought alot of parts for my 97 M3 that I had before. I love this web for parts.
Now I got Cayenne and its time to change brakes (rotors and pads), but I never done that before on porsche. So I need some tips how hard to do that my self. Do I need any special tools? What pads and rotor are bast? I prefer OEM, but if there some one with more expirience.... please help.

First off what you need:
Front: Pad sensors(2), L Rotor, R Rotor, Caliper mounting bolts(4), Pads, and Hardware
Rear Pad sensors(2), Rotors(2), Caliper mounting bolts(4), Pads, and Hardware

Brakes are really easy on cayennes. You need basic sockets, breaker bar(to get caliper bolts off), skinny long punch, hammer, pick, larger torx(remove bolt holding on front rotors), size 5(i think) triple square(remove rear rotors), 14 or 16 triple square for the rear caliper bracket.

Here is a step by step that I am doing off the top of my head...

FRONTS
-Remove pad sensors(you might need to use a small flat head screw driver to get the plug unclipped)
-Unbolt the(13 or 15mm) bolt in the center of the caliper.
-Remove the pin that the bolt went into that holds down the pad retainer/bridge. Do this with the small punch and hammer.
-Remove sensor, retainer/bridge, and pads. You might need to pry the pads to push the pistons in to get the pads out.
-Turn the wheel to access the caliper mounting bolts
-Remove the bolts
-Unscrew the torx holding the rotor to the hub
-Remove rotor
-Install new rotor and screw in torx.
-Install caliper. USE NEW BOLTS. It might be hard to get the bolts lined up but take your time.
-Pry in caliper pistons and install pads.
-Install NEW retainer/bridge
-Install new pad sensors(make sure they are flush in the pad, i press them in with a pocket screwdriver)
-Press down on the retainer/bridge and install the new pin and bolt.

REARS
-Remove pad sensors. Like the front,you might need to use a small flat head screw driver to get the plug unclipped
-Remove the clip with a pick that is in the pin.
-Remove the pin that the clip went into. Do this with the small punch and hammer.
-Remove sensor, retainer/bridge, and pads. You might need to pry the pads to push the pistons in to get the pads out.
-Remove the caliper bolts. They are 14 or 16 triple square. There is a wire in the way that you need to remove. Just spray the grommet with wd40 and it will come off easy.
-Unscrew the torx holding the rotor to the hub.
-Unscrew the small triple square for the parking brake.
-Remove the rotor. The parking brakes grooves into the rotor. You need to adjust it or use a pry bar and pry it off.
-Install new rotor and screw in torx and triple square.
-Install caliper. USE NEW BOLTS. It might be hard to get the bolts lined up but take your time.
-Pry in caliper pistons and install pads.
-Install NEW retainer/bridge
-Install new pad sensors(make sure they are flush in the pad, i press them in with a pocket screwdriver)
-Put the grommet back in place.
-Press down on the retainer/bridge and install the new pin and clip.

Remember after doing brakes to pump the pedal before starting.

Also, being an 2004 you were due for a brake flush last year. If you didnt do it now is a good time.

Note: there could be steps missing. I am not responsible for any injury and broken part. This should be done by a trained professional.

Dosen't look very easy, but I think I can do it with no problem, I have done alot of german cars like BMW's and Mersedes becides Japanises cars.

So I'm just gonna need new caliper bolts and all brake sensors becides pads and rotors?

And what about that cliper mounting bolts? Haven't use that before.

It's pretty easy.
You will need these parts, check with the parts guys to make sure these match your vin.

I paid more than $1k for just the parts, but better than dealer he wants $2k plus tax.

just remember the best stopping with be metal on metal. I'm sure they are not that bad. When you grind the rotor surface to the point it's not connected to the hat you might have a problem

Finaly I got it done, took me an hour for just the front... It wasn't hard at all.

Great write-up.

Seems the pad sensors ping the system when there's about 25% (or more) pad left. --Seems a bit crazy, but no doubt it brake warning gets the owners into the dealer faster than needed.
