Back door won't stay up

Every spring amd summer the door stays up just fine. Cold weather hits and it falls. So is this an easy project? Is there a writeup somewhere on how to replace them? Is it a shock or spring in there?

What parts did you use and were did you get them? I plan on searching our host but haven't done it yet.

I haven't needed it yet, but it looks like there are two pair. One pair for the hatch 95551255006, and another for the window 95551252800.

Yes, there are two big shocks for the door and two small ones for the window, but I don't have the part numbers handy. I wouldn't say it's a very easy project, but it is possible to do it. You will need some screwdrivers, a pry bar or two, and some Torx drivers or better yet, Torx bits and a ratchet, T20 I think. First, open the door fully and support it firmly with a pole or something! Next, pop off the rear interior panel with the light in it. Then, unscrew the little plastic doors in the rear side panels and pop the rear of the side panels loose. Next, unscrew the two white plastic brackets that cover those rubber hose looking things. Then, use a big screwdriver to get the two triangular foam pieces out which are held in with some tar-like glue. Now you can see the shocks. Use a long screwdriver to pop the retaining clips off the ball ends of the shocks. Then, use a bigger screwdriver to pop the shocks loose and you should then be able to slide the shocks out, one end at a time. Now get the new shocks with the retaining clips on them and slide them into position. Use a pry bar to pop the shocks onto the ball joints. You may have to have someone move the door up and down slightly while you do this. Once the shocks are connected and will support the door, go ahead and reverse all the other procedures described here and you're done.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll give it a shot. The window ones work just fine for now but since I'm in there I might as well just do those too...

will easily show what they call it an emergency room. Let's avoid that""

This thing is heavy FORGET ABOUT HOLDING IT OPEN WITH BROOM HANDLE.

The trick is when you get the shock out and are putting the new one in you need
a small hammer to tap the new one in and you must connect the rear of the shock first (towards the front of car) then have person 2 lift the door 100% up and connect the rear end of the shock.

This is really not a big job

Actually, the pair for the hatch are different from side to side. The right side fitment is 95551255006, but the left side is 95551255007. The window struts are the same side-to-side, and that 95551252800 part number is correct.

Brad: I don't mean to be rude, but I placed an oder with our host Pelican back on November 2011 for part number 955-512-550-06-M24 and received two shocks for the main rear door/hatch (NOT the glass) and my mechanic was able to replace them with no issue and it all works fine. Just a note, not meant to start a battle....
