Transmission issue, can't get truck out of D

The tow truck is on the way, but I wanted to see if anyone could shed some light as to what could be wrong with my 03 Turbo.

After a 2 hour highway drive, that included a stop where I turned off the car, we arrived to our destination, only to find out that when I put the car on "P", the dash indicator and transmission, would still remain in "D" The shift lever can be moved from P to R to N, but takes a lot of effort to get into D. Once in D, I can go into the manual mode and shift it to 1st (dash indicator confirms this), but I cannot get the car out of D.

Had to remove the 2 fuel pump relays to turn the car off as it won't do it with the key since it thinks it is in D. Once off, I removed the negative terminal of the battery (under driver's seat) and when I re connected the battery, all I got was a air suspension fault code. The car still thinks it is in D, but now the dash indicates as if P, R, N, and D are all selected at the same time.

Anyone ever gone through anything like this? Any idea what the solution will/could be?

Thanks in advance for any and all help regarding this matter.

Well that sucks. All that I can think of is the neutral->drive lockout is confused.

That is, there is a lock-out solenoid which engages to keep the driver (or passenger) from selecting (or bumping) for example, Drive from Neutral (at a stop) w/o first stepping on the brake. ...or pulling out of Park...

Normal operation allows N to be selected from D whenever.

So, I expect that electromagnet/solenoid lock-out is usually sprung to the lock position, and the solenoid (when working) pulls the lock open when running, as needed. (which would make sense for no power consumption when Parked.) But I had no idea that it could lock-down Drive.

95562417001 might be the part needed.

Thanks! The truck just arrived the stealership, so I am off to the pharmacy to get a jar of vaseline and some valium...

Your explanation of the solenoid makes perfect sense and I can easily feel/hear when I press on the brake and the solenoid engages when trying to go from Park to Reverse.

fwiw, here's the exploded view of the shifter.

Apparently there are two solenoids (#7) ...maybe one for Park Reverse, and another for N /D.

Much appreciated! I will update this thread as soon as I get any news from the dealership, but already was told that it will be a couple of days before they can look at it due to the previous appointments already in place.

Well, as it turns out, as per the dealer, the cable pictured below is the culprit for this issue

Any idea what the part number for this cable is? The dealer will only tell me that it costs $228 (Panama; USA it's $160) and another $338 to install it

UPDATE: I just got the truck back this past Saturday due to a major delay in getting the part delivered. I saw the "old" cable and the ends look like they are new! Will post some images so some experts will chime in as to wether or not it merited replacement or not. So far, the truck is working, BUT....., somehow, they managed to mess up the manual mode of the shifter. If I put the lever into the manual portion of the gate, the lever will sometimes work, others (most of the time) does not. When it works, it updshifts fine from first to second to third, but that is it. Downshifting never works. The transmission will work "manually" from the buttons on the steering wheel.
Stealership says that it now needs a new sensor and the sensor alone was over $450. I am SSSOOO fet up with this vehicle and the dealer.

sound like the dealer broke it. ...or put it out of adjustment.

sucks. ...and why I avoid the dealers.

For future reference to all: I took the truck in this morning and told the stealership to re check the electromagnets and after a couple of hours, my truck is back working properly. They in fact messed up during the re install of the cable whereby missed one of the electromagnets.
