Cayenne sighting
 

I saw my first actual Cayenne on the road last weekend up in Estes Park, Colorado. Did the flash, wave, swerve...etc from my SC, no response from the Cayenne dude. The guy was looking at me like I was a nut. Oh well.

You gotta just wave or say "Nice ride man!" and be done with it. At least I'm to the point now where all cars earlier than 964s get a wave or a "Nice ride man!" from me, but I don't look to see if they respond.
Young guys (like in their early 20s) and older guys (50s) always respond. It's all the buttholes in my age group (30s-40s) who think their ***** doesn't stink.

The P-SUV thing in my opinion is the ultimate wanker mobile.

How could I wave at one? One hand would be pinching my nose, while the other would be holding open the barf bag!


I cannot seem to understand their strategy with it. I would be extremely surprised if it becomes a hit. This whole SUV fad is on the way out. I tend to think Porsche came in 4 yrs too late.

I would never drive one and if we given one it would be sold to buy a GMC to pull a 80's Carerra.

I keep thinking that this model would be great to haul the keg to the next event.

Wouldn't surprise me if Porsche enters several of them in Paris/Dakar to further "prove" their sporting intentions. If I wanted to go off roading, okay, but for a boulevard soccer mom poseur? Think not! Arrgh!

Well here we go again with the Cayenne critics but I gotta say that I like the look of it pulling the speed boat in a recent Excellence (?) mag. The side view I thought was actually quite Porsche and I wouldn't mind pulling my ski boat with it - mind you I'd never have the money to buy it and if I did, I still rather spend the money on a trackcar and a new boat and still have money for an old 4x4 for the pulling work.

Still I think it looks quite attractive in that photo.

Porsche has been so proud to state that they only make sports cars! This was true until now....damn the SUV!!! I would rather drive a 944. :eek:

I didn't know they were available yet.

I can't wait to see in person if it is as bad as it looks in pictures.

Kurt is right, us "older guys" do wave and it's probably because we remember driving Porsches in the 60's and 70's when it was really rare and a treat to see another car like yours. There was a real feeling of shared experience. Now, who know what or who's driving the next Porsche you see. Wave or flash anyway, who cares if they don't respond. To bad we can't identify each other as Pelicanites, problem is we'd have to pull over and blab about what cars are going to be found in some New York garage or what you're doing with your cool collar now that you realize it does not change your oil temperature (just kidding;) )

Colorado...the common location for high altitude car testing. You could have seen a Porsche test driver doing the SUV thing...

The other day, I'm washing my minerva blue SC in my driveway, while my buddy has his white 930 double parked across the street.

Two in-your-face Porsches parked pretty much on the road so that you have to drive between the two if you're travelling along the road.

Here comes butthole in Kurt's age group (~30 yrs) in his silver 996. Drives between the two cars without a blink, turn of his his head, nod...nothing. He may not even have noticed.

Maybe he's not a car guy? ...probably gay.

I think we should all adopt a new Porsche wave for Cayenne drivers. Whenever you see one, just stick your arm out the window, and give a nice "thumbs down". ;)

You guys are pathetic. Thumbs down to you. I'm going to wave to every one of those Cayenne drivers because chances are that the dude has a 993TT for a weekend car too, and maybe an old '73 for a track car.

I wave/flash to Boxster/996 drivers too and they always wave back.

Right. It's just in my neck of the woods 996 wavers express themselves differently.
1) Invisible hand waving while looking away.
2) Down the nose, half look, no smile, invisible hand waving.
3) And implied middle-finger waving.

Once I have a car that'll smoke a 996, I will hunt them down like dogs and spank their @sses blue. And I'll wave out the back window as I pull away in my super light 2000lb 250 HP 964 powered 84-89 Carrera.
I'll Put "996s suck my @ss" on my license plate holder too, on the top.
But "So do you, wanker" on the bottom, just for everyone else.
But I'll let the Boxster owners skate by unless they make me mad. And if they do, I'll kick their asses too.

It will rule.

But alas, maybe by then I'll be able to afford a 993 (and still eat and go out and stuff and keep my 3.2).

Then I won't be so angry inside. I'm Permanently disgruntled right now.

Heck, I might even paint a picture of Jim T on my living room wall, yelling at some poor guy and making him cry, and then kicking dirt on his shoes for using non OEM wax on his car.

Small problem. Do you think the average non-enthusiast 996 owner knows that they are driving a 996? They only know that are driving a 911.

Kurt -- another small problem -- How are you going to "smoke" someone whose tach needle has never seen the far side of 4K? You might as well smoke a Yugo.

No offense to those that have 996's and use them. I'm in the same position, I go out to the east end of Long Island (Hamptons) and I see any number of people whose main concerns in purchasing these cars were the crest on the hood and the color. They never wave, never stop to chat, and are only annoyed by any inquiry about their car.

Pisses me off. I don't believe in this "It's his car, let him do what he wants" crap. It's his kid, why can't he abuse it? People who don't respect/appreciate their cars should have them taken away.

Lighten up man. It is just a simple fact that the majority of new, water-cooled Porsche owners (including potential P-SUV owners) are not true P-car enthusiasts like most of us simple folk. They buy on the basis of improved (perceived) status, or ignorant bliss (like: "because it looked cool"). Hence the reason for the blank stares, snobby smirks, and funny looks when you wave/flash. It has been my personal experience that as the model year of 911 goes up, the percentage of owners who have a clue as to what they are driving goes down. Also, (IMO) I bet you would be hard-pressed to find someone with a `73 track car that owns a Cayenne as well. People that have track cars, and the extra money to spend, would probably buy a Dodge/Ford/Chevy heavy duty/diesel truck to tow it with, instead of some fancy pepper-wagon. ;)

My worst nightmare is that the Cayenne will sell beyond Porsche's wildest dreams, hence validating their new "market driven" strategy.

Then we'll hear... "We'd love to go back to racing, and we realize we pissed off some of our (former) sports car fans by indefinitely delaying the Carrera GT, the 996-v8, the Boxster 3.6L, and the planned Boxster Coupe (2500 lbs. with 250hp 3.2L) and Coupe CS (2450 lbs. with 295hp 3.6L), but you can't argue with market demand -- buyers, especially landscape architects based in Monaco and Carmel, are just crying for a Cayenne Crew Cab for their fleets. We're even introducing some new colors such as Kentucky Bluegrass, Maple Tree Red, and Green Thumb."

Even worse than the fact that Porsche is bringing the pig to market is that the beast will sell and sell well. SUVs are not a fad, despite what many people say. Fads die quickly. The popularity of SUVs has been growing each year for 25+ years.

Granted, they have to evolve from the traditional truck-based chassis and truck-like handling, gas mileage and performance, but they aren't losing popularity. Porsche knows that, at least. There is no doubt in my mind, the Cayenne is the Porsche of SUVs and will be rock solid, fast, ride great, handle fantastically, and leak a little oil. :D

It still sucks.

Maybe it wasn't the new Porsche, but one of the new VWs instead!?!

Well, I'm 35 and drive a hot rod '72 911 that makes around 270hp at wheels and is now on a serious diet on a quest for 2100 pounds.

When I sell my house (or win the lottery - whichever comes first!) I will be proud to park a TT Cayenne in the garage next to my '72.

And, FWIW, it's not really a SUV but part of the growing number of SUV/station wagon hybrids which looks like the next wave of such vehicles.

Personally, I can only think of one car builder with the history and knowledge to tackle such a task. Porsche's racing history coupled with its rally history should add up to a potent sports car that can boogie in the sand, the snow or haul a keg or three to a ranch bar-b-que. It would also be ideal to haul my almost 4 year old daughter and all her 'stuff' around town or cross country.

I do agree that many of the water-pumper guys may not be aware of the Porsche heritage, but quite a few others are quite active in the racing scene. Heck, even a 996 variant, albeit a racing one, won the GT class at Le Mans recently. And the Factory continues to provide built race cars to the privateers and offer some "help" on the side.

I know the board has a slant to the early cars, but i do find some of the stereotypical criticism here a bit harsh (although I agree with much of it too! :) ) And, it takes alot for me to step in and defend the water cooled Porsches!

While many may diasgree with the concept of the Cayenne, perhaps we should withhold the harshest words until we have seen and driven the beast.

Seems that every iteration of each "new" Porsche has awakened much of the strong feelings shown here . . . and some level of acceptance of the new models years later.

I guess the positive factor here is that each of us truly loves the Porsche that we drive and that strong feeling results in a "fanatic"! Let's hope the newer models and the Cayenne create more fanatics.

I may have committed reverse discrimination this evening! To be honest, I still have trouble identifying 996's, Mitsu Eclipse's (I think?), and Boxsters - they've all got a similar front end. One was coming at me and as it passed I just caught a wave out of the corner of my eye. It was a 996. Oops - sorry leaseboy! ;) -- Curt
