How long do your brakes last?

My 04 seems to go through brake pads like I change my socks. I replace pads every year so I get about 10 to 12k miles of mostly normal driving out of a set. Last time I used OEM pads from Porsche paid almost $500 for just the pads and they lasted the same amount of time as aftermarket so this year I went back to aftermarket. The fronts were almost down to the warning sensors and the rear were about 3/4 done. Do all of the Cayenne's go through brakes this way? I have checked everything else and everything works as it should so there seems to be just normal wear.

I bought my 04 T in 08 and replaced the fronts last September and yet to replace the rears although they are getting close to the sensors. I don't change them until they hit the sensors and I am going to reuse the sensors sense they have barely been touched, that's roughly 36K miles.

So then WTF is going on with mine if you got 4 years out of the front and more out of the rear. How many miles did you drive in that period of time?

Driving style...

Mine went 74k with a less than friendly female driver behind the wheel.

Are you sure you aren't a, what I call a two footed driver. I don't mean to be offensive in any way but I see this quite often. A vehicle is going down the road in front of me and the brake lights are quite frequently flashing on. Excuse me but one foot is on the accelerator and the other one is applying the brake, even if gently. Are you down shifting going downhill instead of applying the brakes? I have a 2500ft downhill drop at least once a day. I run in 3rd gear and the cars in front of me have the brake lights on almost constantly. I edited my 1st post to include the mileage.

No offense taken but no I am not a 2 foot driver. I have a Mercedes S class also and the brakes are fine they last a normal period of time so the problem is not me. I swapped the rotors out 3 brake jobs ago with slotted drilled rotors I am wondering if that is where the problem lies maybe the rotors are eating up the pads. Maybe next brake job I will swap back to stock rotors

It strongly depends on driving style and conditions. Depends too, if you are doing track day weekends or heating those rotors and pads up. This could be a factor. It depends on how often you drive the vehicle too.

1. ) Sure, pad compound and the material / surface texture of a rotor can play a huge role.
A lot of pad compounds are designed to operate within a specific heat range, depends on the
the rotor and details. Not all slotted rotors are equal as are pads too.
2. ) Aftermarket heavy wheels can cause problems.
3. ) Aggressive tire compounds, most don't really consider how much tire compound / grip
plays into how well you can stop. There is such thing as too much as there is too little.
4. ) Bad Combonation of the above.

" Probably " something to do with pad / rotor combonation. Are the pads factory Porsche equipment or with a aftermarket rotor?

Apologies if I do not respond, but these are things to consider or look into.
Regards~

Well I guess I will return everything to stock on the next change and get rid of the slotted rotors. Hopefully I will get the same mileage most of you are getting because that is a very expensive brake job even though I do it myself. Scott did you order the OEM pads for all of these brake changes?

I have an 08, and the front ones on mine lasted less than 20,000 miles. The rears are going to be changed now for the first time and it just turned 65! The fronts have to be replaced also, but they have lasted more than 40,000 miles. replaced with OEM pads.

Whats pads do your run?

Great thread, I am actually just getting ready to change the pads for the first time on my '06 Turbo S as I just recently picked it up. I am going to keep the stock rotors. 380mm front, and 350mm back I believe.

What pads do you guys run? My wheels are the turbo techno in white to match the car... so brake dust is the constant fight. I have been looking toward a ceramic set of pads. EBC Redstuff? Honestly not too concerned about noise. My priority with pad selection is 1- reduce rotor wear, 2 reduce brake dust, 3 the noise. Obviously I dont want less than OEM stopping ability.

Experienced input greatly appreciated.

Thanks

So I just replaced all of the pads and rotors again. I found a complete set on ebay for a good price so I decided I would give them a try. I have had them on for a month now and I am really surprised at the way they are holding up. There is virtually no dust, the wheels are spotless they used to be covered in dust after a week and no squeal at all. Stopping performance is excellent. When you compare the price to factory parts that is where the real difference lies with the OEM costing over a grand and these at $342 even if I they last half as long it is still a bargain. Here is the link if anyone is interested.
