Pelican Parts New Cayenne Stuff will be here for Christmas...

Help me settle a bet please.

I just got the new listing of all the new boutique-type stuff (models, t-shirts, etc.) for this Christmas. The deck is stacked heavily with Cayenne stuff. I see t-shirts, mugs, pens, toy RC cars, pedal cars, and even something interesting sounding like "1/43 History offroad set." (perhaps the Safari SC / Drakar 959, and the Cayenne?).

There's even a Cayenne teddy bear listed.

What do you think, is this stuff going to sell at all? Or is it going to sit on the shelves?

Inquiring minds want to know...

I think by far most of the people here are not too fond of the Cayenne. So would those people buy Cayenne souveniers?

On the other hand there is a potential market. The question is if you can get in contact with it/find it. At least the chance of finding it here is very small.

We're talking "new people" with a different view on the word PORSCHE. I don't think Cayenne owners will be the same kind of pelican addicts wasting their employers time here such as many of us do You may have to look elsewhere.

I wonder if polling us will really mean anything Wayne. We aren't really the customers for this sort of thing by and large. It's almost as if Porsche started selling speed boats or something. Sure some of us are probably into boats but.. well you get my drift.

Wayne,

I would be interested exclusively in the 1:43 off-road set "1/43 History offroad set." (perhaps the Safari SC / Drakar 959, and the Cayenne?). if it as you suspect. But only to get the non-Cayenne vehicles. -- Curt

Wayne, to be honest, I think that the Cayenne crowd would be hard-pressed to find its way to your site. What I'd do is open a Cayenne info/chat section, and hold off on ordering cayenne specific merchandise until you see what kind of traffic and interest there is.

I'll go against the grain... as usual. I've always liked the oddball Porsches, hell, I own one. While I'll always like the 911, I think the other models offer a lot to their market. If I had the bucks, I'd buy the Cayenne, if not for the performance, then for it's technology.

I for one would like to see some samples of the "stuff". Got any pics, Wayne?

Wayne-

Perhaps I should be a little less sarchastic and get to your question...I agree with the previous post that a "wait and see" might be a better approach. I think the folks that would purchase a lot of those items don't even know what the Cayenne is yet...and wouldn't look to this site but perhaps the dealership parts/showroom counter for the teddy bear, etc. after purchasing a Cayenne.

Beyond that, excellent BBS, excellent parts service...

I've got a few 1/43 models on my desk.

But only cars that are desireable to me- I used to have, or wish I had or such gorgeous lines that it's hard to stop looking at them. A 911 is a car to desire. Just as there are no ten year old kids saying "Please dad, please buy a Chevy Corsica", the Cayenne is not a desireable vehicle to the masses. The botique items will only interest those that own (or fools that lease) the real thing.

Wink

I'd be interested in the model set. First, I'd have fun touching up the Pepperwagen model with a sledgehammer, then I'd place the other three gently upon a shelf.

I think it's pretty funny how people are openly hostile about the Cayenne. I wonder why that is.

I agree with BGCarerra32... I think that if you could sell a body kit for it you could sell a boat load! I'm thinking of a slant nose kit so at least it would look like a dust buster! Much less offensive.

Because it sucks, because its sad that a company that prided it self on "At Porshe We Only Build Sportscars" now builds a minivan that is a dead ringer for the Hyundai Santa Fe, because its sad that Porsche at a time is is recording RECORD profits built a minivan for no reason and stopped racing because of it, because its really really ugly with absolutely no Porsche flair (it would be plain and uninspiring even as a VW or Audi), because Porsche execs love to go to PCA events and brag about record profits out of one side of their mouth then try to twist the arms of enthusiasts to accept the PepperVagen (a term that I coined, thank you) Minivan, because you thought Poseurs bought Porsches now - wait until the Cayenne Minivan crowd hits the scene (the first time I see a Cayenne with the Ubiquitous "Harley Davidson" sticker on the back window in Newport Beach, I'll probably throw my shoe at it and puke), and, because, well, it sucks.

Jim,

FWIW, the VW version looks really nice. I would consider getting that one with the monster V10 diesel. The Porsche model is truly ugly and way too expensive. I don't think spending $40k more for a faster uglier version is worth it.

Wayne,

I am sure that you could sell some Cayenne stuff, but not to many of us on this site and probably not enough to make it worth the effort. You might have more luck on the Rennlist 996 board. That said, I bet most people interested in the Cayenne would buy accessories at the dealership when they are putting down their deposits.

First off - I'm not too fond of the Cayenne myself. Although not against SUV's, I don't believe that this is what the traditional Porsche customer wants the company to produce.

Anyway, I stopped off at my local Porsche dealer (metro Atlanta) when I was in the area and had a few minutes to burn. I was looking around the showroom and a salesman came over to talk me into the 2002 Turbo that was in the middle of their showroom ($180K). We chatted for a few minutes and I asked him when they would be getting a Cayenne in stock. He said Feb/March 2003 timeframe, and without taking another breath, says they have over 200 on the waiting list!

Did you now? Well, it should be spelled 'Pepperwagen' with a 'w' instead of a 'v', even though the 'w' is pronounced like a 'v'. I'm not sure what a vagen is, but wagen is German for wagon (car).

That said, I agree that the thing is hideously ugly and more importantly, that it signals the death of Porsche as a passionate sports car marque. The very idea of Porsche abandoning its heritage and disregarding the most important endurance race in the world to build YAFSUV grates at every nerve.
