2011 Cayenne S ATF Change
 

From 2011 Porsche changed the Aisin transmission. The 17mm fill plug and separate drain plug on the old transmission was replaced by a single drain plug and overflow tube.

What is the best way to pump in fluid while the engine is running and ATF at 40degrees ?

I have a 2006, but imagine the fill procedure to be similar. You really need a pressurized fluid pump to do this job best. I've tried it with an autostore gear oil hand pump and it's hard. If you look online, there are many examples of how to make a pressurized fluid pump by repurposing a garden sprayer at low cost. I suspect Pelican or others sell a comparable professional tool.

With the car level and your chosen pump full of the correct fluid, fill the COLD transmission with the engine off until the fluid begins to overflow. Then, with the car wheels chocked and the emergency brake on, start the engine and resume filling the trans until it overflows. Ideally you'll be able to do this in about 5 mins -- this is why having the pressurized pump is really useful -- it's much faster than pumping by hand. Now get in the car and shift between R and D slowly for about 30 seconds. Then make sure the car is in park, and try filling the trans a bit more until it begins to overflow again -- it likely won't take much more.

With the engine still running and the trans overflow open (and dripping), measure the temp of the trans pan using a IR termometer or Durametric. At 40°C close the fill port. If you don't have an IR thermometer or Durametric, the trans will reach that temp after about 10 minutes of the engine running -- it will feel warm, not too hot to touch.

Job done. Also, if it wasn't obvious, this is a really messy job. Have lots of shop towels on-hand and a big metal drip pan under your trans while working. Good luck.

Thank you for the reply. I have the garden sprayer pump modified and a thermometer. However the 2011 Cayenne does not have the 17mm fill port that the previous model had.

Hence I can fill through the drain plug with the overflow tube in, or:

I did notice two other ports: one on the electric ATF pump and second a torx plug on top of the transmission which is difficult to remove.

There must be an easy way!

I did some Googling and generally came up short on specifics. Appears from a picture I saw that there are pipes that connect to the oil cooler on the side of the trans. Not sure how accessible they are whilst in the car, but seems like undoing the return line and filling through that port could work.

Problem solved. The 2011 S has a fill port on the drivers side of the transmission with a Torx 55 plug. This is difficult to access and the plug is tight. I used a 55 Torx socket and a 13mm ratchet. The rest of the process is similar to the Tech Article except to fill I used a garden sprayer with a copper tube bent into a pipe. Then I replaced the ATF removed plus 0.5 quart and replaced the fill plug. The transmission was run up to 40 degrees and the drain plug removed to displace excess ATF over the 36mm stand pipe.
The fluid was dirty and the magnets had some filings so servicing at 90,000miles is preferable to the 160,000 specified.
