Nick, in answer to your question on crank or no crank, it's "no crank" the first couple of tries. Also, I've found that if I pump the brake pedal 3 times before turning the key, it will start, usually the first time.

If your Cayenne is one of the ones that requires a brake pedal to be pressed to start, you probably have an intermittent fault with one of the switches.
