Looking at a private collection etique
One of the fun off shoots of going and looking at a car to buy or even selling a car is maybe meeting a fellow enthusiast, making a new friend.
One way to burn that bridge is with bad manners. Besides the ones talked about here in transaction fair play. There is looking at sellers other cars, maybe even their collection. So these are my suggestions. 1) Do not talk about other cars, enjoy the ones being shown to you. The last thing some one wants to hear when they are showing their pride and joy is for their audience to be talking about other cars. You do not talk to the person you are having sex with about other women you like, same thing. 2) Do not talk money, how much he paid? how much they are worth now? etc. 3) Do not point out flaws in the cars being shown, paint chips, oil leaks, incorrect parts, etc. Things to do 1) Ask question about the car you are looking at, history?, what he enjoys about it? etc. 2) Answers question asked about your cars by your host. 3) Volunteer information that would make you a better audience, "I use to work on these", "I used to race these", "This was my dream car as a kid", etc. When showing your cars 1) Do not say this is the best or bad mouth other cars, your viewers might have driven up in one of those. 2) Do not talk money. Are you showing your investment portfolio or are you sharing your car hobby? I am sure there are many more good rules to follow, these are just some of mine. Enjoy! |

Yeah, I guess I am serious.
I think I am done with d@@ks who just can not enjoy a car. They seem to always be measuring it to something or somebody?, who knows? it is like a competition? or what I do not know? I have met some really neat people buying and selling cars. but I have also met the real insecure weirdos. I do not do car show cars and there is a reason for it. I guess I am not a "people person". |

Sellers want to hear about how great their cars are, how much the buyer loves them, how much the buyer will love the car when he buys it, etc, etc. Unfortunately, you can't script a sale.
Buyers want a fair deal (or better) for a great car. There will always be disjointed interests because it's a negotiated sale. You can't set rules for this type of thing. I agree it can be uncomfortable, but compromise is never easy. ![]()

I think a lot of what he said is common sense. If I’m meeting a guy to buy a car I don’t wander off into his garage unless invited. And only a chump would start in on,”Dude, that’s an RSA. That must be worth a hundred thousand dollars!!!” Or “Nice S. I’ve got one too. It’s a one of one equipped with a fenuber valve. Can you imagine that?”

What sparked this rant? There has to be something behind the topic. Details?

My friend can be an eclectic (ok weird) guy sometimes.
I went halfway cross country to buy an old Shelby. I purposely didn’t invite him over another guy due to Me being afraid of him saying something stupid and pissing off the seller. There’s been more than a few bikes i wouldn’t have sold To certain people even if they offered me over my asking price. Last edited by Pchmotoho; 07-16-2018 at 04:32 PM.. Reason: Spelling |

My favorite dickweed question is the inevitable
“Why are you selling it?” “Well because it’s actually a complete turd that I want to unload on some moron. You look like a good candidate. Whatcha think?” When interacting with your fellow man simply stick to the age old truism: “Better to keep your mouth shut and let people assume you’re an idiot than to open it and remove all doubt.” |

I stopped reading after "rule" 1. The guy I bought my 911 from had about a million dollars worth of classic Mercedes and a couple 356's. The lowly SC I was buying was the car he was least interested in. He was more than happy to show me his collection and talk about the cars he was actually passionate about. After we sealed the deal on the 911 he let me drive a beautiful SL he just completed an engine swap on to the bank to get a check.

My favorite is when people say in a condescending tone that I was somehow lucky that I paid what I did for my 74 back in 2010. But the truth is if they had been with me the day I bought it they would’ve thought that I was fool to part with good money for what was then the lowest of the low in 911s.
I get lowball offers from time to time. Not from strangers but from people that should know better...

Not so private!
![]() Those $1000.00 per hour comments were in reference to ManInBlack, who made that boast in a thread some time back. |
