964 RS-clone - valuation
Hi,
I'm currently restoring a non-sunroof 964 coupe to RS-spec, for the most part (ie no seam welding). How does absolute authenticity matter towards value? For example: - steel or aluminum hood (or OEM kevlar) - power or manual steering rack - power or manual windows - undersealing or not - 77 liter tank or 92 Given appraisals are based on the market, how does one typically establish a value, primarily for insurance purposes, on a modified vehicle? Thanks Last edited by jobu64; 09-21-2018 at 05:44 PM.. |

Are you building this as an RS-inspired hot rod or a true RS clone?

Closer to a clone. I'm guessing Genuine Porsche parts wherever possible and closer to detail the better for valuation?

Well if you are building to establish value akin to a real RS you will be fighting an uphill battle, it
isn't and will never be the actual item .. However if you are building for driving experience , performance and visual impression you can achieve quite a bit if you have some ability and know how to source rare parts. Placing a value on a clone or a tribute the former much closer to the real deal than the latter you can get some percentage of return on your investment but never expect 100% maybe 50 %. How can I speak to this ? ,I have a 993 completely set up as a '95 RS Cup and its damn close ok! It has a factory 3.8 Cup motor, no sunroof ,light panels front and rear , stripped interior , matter cage, factory MotorSport centerlock hubs , original Speedline no hole 3 piece magnesium centerlock rims, Bilstein Cup coil overs and monobal hats, Sport suspension bearings front and rear RS short shift linkage, RS sport trans and engine mounts , Recaro Pole positions , SS pedals, RS lower dash, RS steering wheel , RS manual rack , Euro no guard bumpers, RS Cup tow , etc.. I could go on but you get the idea, all this and my car is likely worth maybe $175K to 200k could I get it ? Not sure already been offered close , will I sell no way haha .. All this to say just don't expect to get everything out of what ever you or a shop modifies ,it just likely won't happen so why have that expectation..? I imagine if you want some peace of mind insurance wise you get stated value and use receipts for parts and work to get it to some level of modification , not certain insurers are real keen on go fast parts for the street but hey doesn't hurt to take a stab at it, usually though anything that reeks of a race course they will begin moving to the door..haha YMMV , Bert

I will never sell it either. Only trying to stay within logical parameters of a clean car for insurance valuations. Like you said, I wondered if Genuine Porsche RS springs & struts (on a receipt is just a part number) as apart of a 'restoration' would be considered more favorably towards a restored value or condition over "go fast parts" such as aftermarket KW's (even though these would be more road friendly). |

In my estimation the closer to factory equipped or even design of factory components the better !

A true clone will command decent money a tribute is your guess is as good as mine.
Bert sounds like a nice build. I remember the days being on track with real supercups boy did they scream. I haven't seen a set of no hole magnesium speedlines in decades.
