82 SC opinions insight or knowledge of car?

Looking at picking this car up.

Would love opinions on its pricing and knowledge of the car.

They aren’t negotiable.

Thanks Pelican’ers.

That’s more than I’d pay for that car. The market is softening for all the generic 911s people over paid for 5 years ago. I wouldn’t even call it soft as much as a correction. Spend a few $$ more and pickup a Carerra or 993.

Lots of miles. I'd be wanting to see the rebuild docs. If it's never been rebuilt, I'd be reticent.

Why is that one A-arm covered in grease/oil?

Seems like a lot of money for a lot of unknowns. I would want to see a service history. Was there continual care or did the car get neglected for periods of time? Have there been popular upgrades like Carrara tensioners, pop off valve, turbo tie rods, valve covers, etc. you see on well loved cars?

Nothing wrong with an SC, I specifically sought one out as I felt it was the best fit for me. This particular car is priced at the top of range but I don't know if it deserves to be, $30-32k seems more appropriate.

Car should be sorted for that kind of coin.

The main records/receipts for the car show a full transmission rebuild new synchros new clutch new mounts etc only 6000 miles ago but was done in 2002! Everything motor wise was inspected at this time as well by a reputable Porsche mechanic. Inspection sheet was included with the receipts.

The fact that it has only driven 6000 miles in 16 years is interesting but possible.

So trans is probably well sorted.... no records on if engine has been freshened or not. Rear main oil seal was mentioned as replaced.

Rear main seal was probably done when the clutch and tranny were. 6k in 16 years makes me think it sat for a long long time. Looking more like a $30k car to me.

Keep looking if they really aren't willing to negotiate.

Just new synchros is not a full transmission rebuild. That's about as much of a service as rebushing a couple rockers and doing a valve adjustment. I hope the receipt shows more than $300 of synchros.

If so well serviced why do they need to hold the hood up with a broomstick or equivalent?

It looks like someone sprayed undercoating on the car very recently. The difficulty is that if the car has had any serious bodywork the undercoating could serve to hide the work. From what I can see in the pictures, the car has had some paintwork done but the pictures aren’t high enough resolution to confirm how much work was done and to what quality. 6000 miles in 16 years seems unlikely, either the car sat due to issues or the odometer stopped functioning. Have you run a carfax on it?

Just call it.

Can someone same "Restoration In A Can"?

What you are seeing is not grease. It's road dirt, rust, and crust painted over the old fashioned way. Cheese ball.

To me it does not look like it has been under coated. Looks similar to many many 911 underbody pictures I have seen. That is definitely grease on that lower control control arm.

What would be the point in undercoating this car... what areas would I look for in person to see if it’s rust undercoated and hidden?

It does not look like it's undercoated because it's not - it's rattle-canned black here, there and wherever. You can easily tell this - look at the drain plug around the bottom of the gas tank where the original Wurth undercoat came loose and where it started to rust and then covered in Krylon. Its been touched and it doesn't take an educated person to see this. They obviously painted over the bottom of the rusty tank, the a-arms, the ac condensor cover, the steering rack cover, etc.

and to counter your statement...it looks nothing like hundreds of original 911 underbodies that I have seen - that haven't been so-called detailed, painted over, and/or "brushed" over by an artists hand up on a lift. Most, if not all, 911 underbodies when properly cleaned come up Wurth gray or maybe at least splotchy in some overspray (if at all).

And yes, that is probably grease or whatever...painted over black.

At that price you should keep looking. Do a search on the seller both here and on Rennlist.

I guess it’s hard for me to tell without seeing it in person.

I mean is it really that big of a deal if they sprayed some undercoating in it? You would be able to see if they were really covering up damage in person... I just can’t tell from these pictures.

When surveying the entire market right now I don’t see a better car for the money or less that is as nice overall as this car.

Thanks

Overpriced for the condition of the car.
No mention of head-studs. I will bet you it needs them
The Speedo in the dash did not come with this car
Odd / ugly additions: Rear lower fog light / Rear cyclops brake light ?
Turbo deck lid configured for rear wiper
Depending on how much history it has, if it has had a top end ?. But in this market I'd be inclined to start at 20k, offer up to 23k and then walk if he says no.
Thousands of better guards red SC's out there, and the porsche driver market is pretty much flaccid.

The guy from GR used to come on here. Check him out and his responses, think his handle was GRgallery or something. IIRC his name was Greg, and to his credit he did know that a 911 motor is located in the rear of the car.

Sounds like you already bought the car or at a minimum convinced yourself to buy it. Good luck.

Seek and you shall find. You would be well ahead by looking at this car, and you can probably negotiate a little, which would leave you with a war chest for the inevitable mods, down the road.

I was gonna say he sounds like he’s selling it more than buying it...
