'89 3.2 targa sold for $92K ?!?!?
I suppose this shows how nuts people can be at auctions (Mecum Kissimee 2023) when they really want something.
A clean car certainly, but with over 100k miles I found the hammer price surprising. This one was shown during the Motortrend TV live coverage. The reserve came off at $65K or so but the bidding went on, quickly reaching the final sale price of $92K. https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0123-542867/1989-porsche-911-targa/ Or am I out of touch with the market and this is an appropriate auction price for this car? Btw, the same day two different '67 convertible corvettes (one a big block and the other a small block) both went in the mid $60K range. |

Wow. Higher than I would have expected but as someone who has a 88 commemorative edition targa w 62k miles (albeit modded so as to be a hot rod)… I love this print!

If you watch BAT everyday this is not a surprise. The nice cars are still bringing a premium price but the average car may be struggling in this market.

Someone got the red mist and just had to have it, though the price isn’t really that far out of whack.

The car has the look. Paint and interior look perfect and it has a good stance.
I can see how someone would get excited about that car and have to have it. As Matt said. Anything under $100k isn't that high anymore. And I just noticed it's one of the G50 cars. Some buddy telling him "those G50 are selling for $$$$" could get someone with too much cash in a buying frenzy.

Along with the BAT that went for $90K+ recently, this is clearly the start of the 87-89 Targa explosion
![]() Er...or one can hope. Bright red, but engine did not look especially clean, interior has new seat covers, but typical carpet wear. Agree with Matt - bidder was being called a wuss by his friends. There is hope for my car someday.

Great Stance..... but I agree given miles the price seems a bit high.

I must live in an alternate universe, but all those prices sound crazy to me.

I can think of other cars I’d rather drive for that money, but it is what it is.

At 100K miles, these cars are under 3K miles a year. I think like the early cars, a vast majority are a the point where they've had some major maintenance (clutch, suspension, engine etc.) and are a solid base to drive for a long time. Rust is much less of an issue and who cares about AC (OK, my wife does...)? I think this was a bucket list car for a buyer, and cocktails.

Byron - it would be nice to see our oft disparaged Targas to finally get some respect
![]() There must be a pretty sizeable group of Boomer retirees executing bucket list buys. Very similar cars selling with a $60K difference is a head scratcher.

Lovely. I kept the hardtop when I sold mine, hoping to one day acquire one again.

![]() I am rebuilding the 81 SC, you may recognize it, as it spent a good amount of time in Colorado. ![]() I'm sure I don't have tell you, a 3.4, short gears and 9" Fuchs are not a good combination for uphill and snow.
