Fair charge for Carrara style oil cooler?

What is a reasonable charge to install the Carrara style oil cooler in place of the trombone one. Including fan, temp switch too stone guard etc?

My mechanic off the cuff said $3000. Thinking is too high.

With or without parts? Are you including your parts or including the parts with the deal? The parts alone are $1100 or more (more like $1500 new).

The Pelican kit includes:

Oil Cooler Kit includes:

Late-Style Carrera Oil Cooler
2 Upper Flexible Oil Hoses
Oil Cooler Stone Guard
Lower Cover Plate
Small Oil Hose Gasket
3 Rubber Mounts
Upper Mounting Bracket
Lower Mounting Bracket

I do not even see the fan on this list.

So I suspect it's going to be a six hour job, and that could be $1000 in labor as Tim said. Add the parts, and the rest of the nonsense that goes along with working on an old 911 - including maybe an oil change, and I would not be surprised if you were up in the $2500-$3000 range.

No, he's not far off. He's being smart and protecting his time.

If he wants $3000 labor to do the job WITHOUT the parts, it's way high as Tim said.

He doesn't want the job. That's a take it to someone else quote if that's all labor. That's more labor than rebuilding a gearbox including R&R.

It's a 78 so the car does not have the correct attachment points for the oil cooler. It's not a bolt in.
He will have to pull the headlight and attach the upper mount as well as the lower mount. There is no template for the upper mount, so getting it correct takes time.
The horn bracket is a joke. I had to fabricate one that kept them from hitting the fan. Then the wiring involved for the fan. Not hard but more time.
I would put it at a 16hr job. It's not like he is doing these often enough to be fast at it.

there was a mocal kit at one time that came with the hoses, the cooler although a bit smaller than the Carrera cooler, and a number of the mounting brackets for the trombone cooler cars. no fan though or horn relocation bits. it did not have any sort of stone guard or perimeter seal so I fabbed something up out of 1/4" mesh screen and used the hot water line insulator that is somewhat like roll bar padding at the perimeter seal.

I used one for years on my SC DE'ing and spirited mountain road driving and it was a huge improvement over the loop. I kept that in place for my 1st race season before going to a large bumper cooler for the higher cooler demands. it was a simple install with very good instructions and much less expensive than the Carrera cooler.

if you are not in traffic all the time with it the fan can be an over kill if you can duct air to it for when moving.

Here are some options from BAT:British American Transfer
I think it took me 5 or 6 hours and $1k in parts to do this including 44 row cooler, braided lines, thermostat and fan. Had to fab my own mounting bracket etc.

It seems the world is out of new original style LAENGERER & REICH parts. I've been trying to get a new one for 6 months, they are back ordered everywhere. The dealer's $1300 ones are Modine replacements, may be functionally the same. There are also the $300 copies from TMP in California; you get what you pay for.

Very true. Wait until the "real" one comes in. Don't be fooled and pull the trigger.
