Cruising

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/1015422-1977-porsche-911-euro-carrera-3-0l-1-365-targas-oak-green-metallic-green-interior.html

I keep finding myself cruising by this ad, I called RMC, hung up, then called back.
There is no history, nothing, nada, zilch. It runs and drives but has some obvious needs, its been painted, that doesn't bother me because I love it as is, but I'd like to use it to beat them up on price.
T tops been recovered, DK by whom, looks OK. Engine looks clean, like it was enthusiast kept. I'd do new suspension bushes, tie rods, shocks, fix the tilted ashtray and sort out the dash which would be a pain. But it needs it. Except for the ride height i would leave it as is.
Would you pay his ask $67.5k ?. I think its somewhere between 48 - 52k am i way off ?

The whole dash is askew. The car was jacked by the rockers and one is damaged. This is a ROW car and its not at ROW ride height. There is something funky going on with the pass side front fender lip, they also conveniently cropped the pictures of that fender so its not shown except from far away.

Its an interesting car but there is no way I would buy a car from those guys without seeing it in person and having a PPI done by a shop I trust. Search their name here and on Rennlist. You can buy a car from anyone, from some places you need to be extra careful. I know its a fairly rare car, especially in the US but for the kind of money they want it would need to be a whole lot nicer and well documented for me to even consider it.

Are you looking specifically for a Carrera 3.0 ?

Thanks Trader, I'm aware of RMC and the rep they have. its a bigger project for sure, and i would need a war chest to undertake it. But its a factory oddity, the 3.0 is Low Prod model, plus the famous 3.0 motor.

I'm thinking it could be a unique driver. If i get serious i'll fly down. I'm sure it has needs, a few things dont make sense and i just don't understand why there is zero history on a fairly rare car. But then again TV or youtube shows uncover rare cars each week so why should i be surprised.
Agree that the car might have had a whack, hard to tell but something's up with the dash that bears really investigating. I wonder how the doors close. Really amazed they did not put this on BAT. Hmmm.

Do you love this exact repaint? Because to me it looks like they skipped out on the metallic part of oak green metallic when it was repainted. Compare it to others with this paint color/code, and there’s really no comparison. Maybe it shows better in person, but you can see the mettalic in other car’s images with this paint color. So why not this one? I think oak green mettalic is one of the best colors Porsche offered back then, but this one isn’t even close to it imo. The interior is cool though.

Get serious and fly down. It's awesome. When is the last time you ever saw a Carrera 3.0 for sale, not to mention a Targa? And in that color?!?

I don't really care if it's been repainted. It's a gem. I would seriously check the VIN though - and the engine number - to make sure it's legit.

I don't remember seeing a Carrera Targa 3.0 in a very long, long time.

They only made 646 of these things - so it's rare and it's valuable to the right person.

Holy smokes, that carpet. Awesome.

Plenty more pictures on their site. Interesting rare model. Buying this car site unseen even with a thorough PPI is a gamble.

Clearly some issues with the lip on that passenger front fender. No close ups on the website but a couple more pictures. You can also see where the car was jacked up incorrectly on the lower rocker in front of the pass side rear wheel. Also, looking at the front bellows and where the bumper aligns with the fender looks odd.

If the car checks out then $60k seems about right.

But that carpet... Oh my. I couldn't drive it.

Carpet looks awful, also missing the center console. Over fill on the oil according to the gauge too. Seats need new foam the drivers side is hammered.

I've clicked on this car a couple of times. I dig it, but think it's too rough. I've got a project...

Just looks like a really rough car when you dig a little deeper.

If you want a project buy a nice SC targa and strip it for paint then have a high end place paint it oak green metallic.

The first 911 I ever drove was an 82 Targa in Oak Green Metallic with black and tan interior. I was hooked after that.

This is oak green metallic. Love the factory color, this repaint not so much. Whether it's a good paint job or not, I don't know, that would need to be determined in person. But it doesn't resemble the recipe that Porsche used for their oak green metallic.

We have a 77 930 at work - same exact dash with the same exact issues. Gauge hood flattened out, front edge curled, gap where it meets the door tops is bigger at the top. Ours is leather wrapped and I thought the leather shrinkage is what did the warping. I wouldn't be surprised if this had the same issue so they skinned it. Door tops are green and the dash is not - maybe another clue.
Carpet also looks the same - ours is made out of gold teddy bears or something. I think the green is fantastic!

If you have to have an OGM Carrera 3 I guess you could hold out for another? Kidding, of course.
I would have the conversation over the phone - "Hey, I'm a serious buyer, but don't want waste a trip. I know this car has needs just looking at it on the computer, top dollar for me as I can tell through a screen is XX,XXX. Do you think we could work something out if I see it in person and fall in love?" If you get it, expect a full restoration eventually.. Make sure you can enjoy it in the meantime.

It depends on what you want if for--as a collector's item or as a driver. Nothing wrong with either. Clearly, it has been driven (and into a few things, it looks like), so I guess I don't know why this car is so desirable, other than rarity. Isn't it really just a 78 SC?

The C3s are 930 case and crank based. The engine revs better than an SC. But it’s mostly the same interest that would make an RSA or US 74-75 Carrera more valuable.

Looks yes with the exception of whale tail and carrera script if optioned. Carrera 3.0 has 200hp and 78-79 SC 180hp, 80 SC 188hp, and finally in 81 the SC surpasses the Carrera 3.0, 5 years later with 204 hp. A lot happens in the porsche world in 5 years.

Any numbers matching running, driving Carrera 3.0 for $50k +/- is a great deal in my opinion.
