Porsche 1971 Targa 911S

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and considering buying my first Porsche. A 1971 Targa 2.2-liter 911S flat-six, 5-speed manual transmission, that is currently for sale by a private owner. It's got $38K original miles per the seller. The pictures look very clean and I've asked for the VIN and if the seller would allow me to get a PPI. Any advice about this particular car or tips for a first time buyer would be much appreciated!

Also, any recommendations for a PPI shop in New Haven, CT? Pictures attached. Thanks!

How are you going to use it? Weekend fun car? Daily driver? "investment"?

My recollection of the 2.2 S is that its a pretty peaky engine.. ie, you need to keep it on the boil starting at about 3500-4K rpm and run it to redline to really feel its power.

For US markets, the "e" was the better all around engine imho.

Targas have their fans. I like them. Some only like coupes.

The number one consideration is rust. Numbers two through fifteen as well.

If this car is from the northeast (California plates?), chances are very very high it's had rust repairs. I can see some remedial work there between the pedal box and wheel well. Have an experienced vintage Porsche body guy give all sheet metal a thorough exam.

The mechanical aspects are fairly simple (MFI pump excepted). Ask for a COA and check that all numbers match. If it is a real "S," it's gonna have a high price point, but if it all checks out, should also hold its value well in the coming years.

All that said--it sure looks nice! That color is a favorite of mine.

Thanks for the responses guys! I don't intend to use it as a daily driver, probably just on the weekends (weather permitting) for fun and keep the car as long as possible. Supposedly it was a CA car that the buyer has put 1200 miles on in the last 3 years since he purchased it from CA. He says it's a "European-market example" and also, "offered for sale with records, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and a clean California title".

I will definitely instruct whoever does the PPI to be on the lookout for rust.

Owned for 3 years but hasn’t had a chance to transfer the title? I don’t buy it.

dg567 So you don't think it's a legit car for sale? Seller hasn't responded yet for my request to see the car or the VIN #, but I only messaged him this morning.

Ok, thanks guys. Well I guess if he won't let me see the car or provide the VIN then that would confirm it's not real.

Cut to the chase.... what price is he looking for on the car. That's the easiest clue. Its its well below the market, its a scam. If he wont give you the VIN number, its a scam. If he wont send you copies of the paperwork, its a scam. If he wont let you get a PPI, its a scam. If he won't let you come see the car in person, its a scam. If he offers to truck the car to you and let you decide, its a scam. If he's overseas and deployed its a scam.

Not titled in his name is a HUGE red flag.

Do I need to go on?

Very helpful trader220 thanks. Forgot to include the asking price in my original posting ($30,500). Seemed low to me but wasn't sure since this is my first foray into searching for a Porsche and saw some sold comps on BAT that weren't too far off.

Big time scam!!! I wish if people like this would/do get caught, the penalty would be castration. I have a $25 app on my phone that blocks scammers calls from reaching me. They hear a recorded message of me saying, "Hello...hello....hello. When they catch on that they've been blocked from me, and the hello is a prerecorded answer, they get pissed off and call me every name in the book. It's my way of getting even!!!! Lol

I owned almost the same car a couple of years ago, if you just want to buy a picture I'll sell you this picture for far less than $30,000...

If you did your research on BAT, you should have found that this is the same car.
