Barrett Jackson needs to get a clue

Just starting watching recorded episodes from Scottsdale, so I can skip all the BS hot rods, rat rods, and endless corvettes. Seems quite often that when I see a Porsche going to be the next car up, they go do a profile on another car. In fact they profiled a white 997 speedster. As JohnLennon's mb was on the block, I saw the Speedster was up next. Instead of showing the speedster that they profiled get auctioned, they skipped it and went to profile another car. My advice, if you take the time to profile a car, then take the time to show it get auctioned. Barrett Jackson is full of who gives a damn cars!! When you finally have something nice, and rare, show it getting sold.

Agreed. Seem it has become a big infomercial with very little substance paid to the block.

Actually their main audience could care less about much except muscle iron and the big $$$$$ ( but laughable ) funny amphicars, unusual VW busses and Fred Flintstone type ( plagiarizing Mr. Raw ) 10HP golf cart 50s stuff.
Some in that crowd have reluctantly come to respect Ferrari but that's about it.
Few of them know but Craig himself in his earlier entrepreneur life was once a Porsche modder, among other things made fiberglass SN kits for 911's etc.. I actually bought from him @ a BJ auction, his prototype steel turbo SN Black/cork, with his advertising license plate " U want 1", long long ago. Nice touch was a brake light cut off switch most likely used to brake from speed and exit a off ramp in traffic.

What I find amusing/boring of these auctions - be it BJ or MECUM - are the first few days of what they call 'entry level collectables' which are typically vehicles you would not give a second look at in a parking lot...but somehow pushing them through the auction stage seems to excite people.

After attending a few in the past yrs ..
I totally think its just fake auction for most of the cars.
its more like reality TV show at this point..

Don't be offended.. Hard core Porsche fans are the wrong demographic for the auctions that get shown on TV.

I'm going to assume that what they show on TV and what is happening on the floor and on-line bidder site are completely different.
The guy watching TV isn't a buyer.

I have been to BJ Palm Beach a coupe of times. I find it a bit funny. Its not in Palm Beach proper, its in land at the Palm Beach Fair Grounds which is not really nice at all.

I walk the stacks of cars and its like walking a used car lot. Bring a paint meter and a vid decoder because the overwhelming number of cars are just late model used car. You don't see the rows and rows of what are just somewhat interesting used cars from the 80's on up. Sure there are no Camry's but there is typically an endless supply of plain Jane Mercedes or run of the mill Camaro, Corvette, Pickup, or something slightly more exotic. Rows of used Maserati's which are all sub 30 dollar cars and suicide to own since they're long out of warranty. Plenty of used Jags. Not a whole lot different than what Manheim "High Line" used to be like 15 or more years ago, except the prices are retail.

It seems like Gooding and RM Sothby’s may be more appropriate for folks looking to sell their interesting Porsches. BAT seems to have a pretty good response for nice cars as well.

I had planned to go to this year's Scottsdale auctions, but as usual, "stuff' got in the way...What is the attendance like at one of these shows? Is it possible to get a good look at any of the cars or are there just hordes of people that make viewing difficult?

It gets busier as the week progresses but all the cars are available for viewing. If the owner is not around you might have to wait until its in the staging lane to look inside and hear it run. I've never tried.

I want to go just for the events outside the auction. There are a few PCA guys that go and from what I'm told there is an endless amount of drives and shows to attend without going to a single auction. It's probably like Monterey Car Week now.

I found the auction tent itself to be an ego fest. If you're not buying it's a big 'who cares'?

The tents outside however, the ones that hold the cars to be auctioned, those are the bomb if you ask me. Every shape and size, every model, row upon row. I didn't have enough time to drool over all of them.

I've gone to plenty of auctions. The only 'deals' seem to be when a car that's an outlier comes up. The crowd that's there for Chevys, Fords and Mopars will let a Porsche go through with little or no interest. Of course, the Porsches I've seen at that type of auction tend to be Bondo Bombs and Miami Vice tributes...

On the other hand, if you're buying a car type that's a central focus of the auction, expect the irrational exuberance to take over.
