A case of shoulda woulda coulda

While at last week's Lit Meet, I picked up a copy of Car & Driver, circa october 1965. It had an article on the "new" 912. It was priced at $4700 back then.
Most interesting, though, was the classified section:
Just loved the statement by the Gullwing owner "either in motion or in garage"!

I'll take the 904 for $8k, do they have any 906s for sale?

trader220 03-06-2019 09:03 AM

What's a Gull Wing go for these days?

What's a 904 go for these days?

Matt Monson 03-06-2019 09:06 AM

My old boss at Carquip sold his 904 for $4000 to make the down payment on his first home up Boulder Canyon. He still owns the home and it’s worth several times more than a 904 is today. Ymmv.

you say down payment, not necessarily bought the house. Just out of plain curiosity I wonder which inflated more. Likely the 904

A heck of a lot more than a 912 that's for sure.

912

0-60 in 11 & change.... they don't make them like they used to! :D

I honestly don't know if I've ever met someone who likes to argue about more random minutiae than you. Back in the day, you put a 20% down payment down a house, there was none of this 1% down or interest only loans.

Minutiae maybe but who's arguing? I like to "discuss". That is what we tend to do in "Marketplace Discussion". So 20% down = 5 x 904s to buy the house. Which is worth more today 5 x 904s or the house? You certainly are quick to call the kettle black.

and a house up the canyon ain't so cheap these days. they were pricey when i lived out there 25 years ago...

I sold my 964T before the bubble to pay for my house after my divorce. My house has definitely gone up more and do not regret it.

No, you like to argue. And I don't care what the answer is, so you'll get no argument here. YMMV means your mileage may vary. Maybe selling your 904 and buying a house was a wise choice. Maybe it wasn't. You can masturbate on it if you really care about the answer.

Grady C. had a 904 and I was lucky enough to hang out with him in Northern CO.

Maybe he sold 904's to buy houses as well.

Unobtanium-inc 03-06-2019 02:59 PM

I sold a nice SC Coupe to help with buying my last house, sacrifices must be made sometimes.
Also, if we are checking old ads and anyone finds a time machine, "goes like stink!"

Grady had a Porsche dealership. I don't remember all the details of the story, but Tom might have bought it from him, sold it to him, or both. They knew each other. It was Tom who first introduced me to Grady.

I’m selling 3 of my cars to pay for a complete remodel of a new to me house.

911boost 03-06-2019 05:38 PM

Yep he did Matt.

I guess my second part needed to be in green.

Still remember when the breakfast club started as well as the first few Cars and Coffee, I had the red ‘92 911 turbo.

It sounds like you just need to pimp more, like me - then you wouldn't have to sell stuff off to get things done, bro!!! :D

When there's something extra that I want to buy, I just send Deez and pNutz to the corner a few extra times!

Smart.
A nice home without adding debt will improve your happiness more than any car ever could.
