Hi all,

I am unfortunately considering doing something I never planned on and that is parting ways with my 7-year long ongoing 911 project... I need some help from the excellent community that we have on this forum.

I purchased the car in 2012. Over the next several years I drove it the way it was and then I started the long journey of disassembling each and every component, tagging all the parts, zip-lock bagging them, etc. The car is originally grandprix white and came with the certificate of authenticity; however --- it did have several coats of paint on it.

After disassembling everything I found a painter who (while working with me) spent an immense amount of time media blasting the car (i remember it wasn't sand as that was too abrasive --- however, don't remember exactly what it was that was used), prepping it for paint, and finally painting it. The paint was done in 2017. After it sat in the paint shop for several months allowing for paint to fully dry, etc. I wrapped it up, brought it back to my garage where it has been sitting quietly tucked away on a few furniture dollies.

Unfortunately with changing priorities, family situation, and a change in focus I am now considering parting with the body/shell/chassis as well as all other components of the car. My main goal is to get rid of the chassis. All else I will focus on parting out later.

The car is originally a California car. It spent a massive portion of its life there. Below are some pictures of it prior to the disassembly. Note, pictures make the "original" paint look pretty good; however it was chipping all over the place and that was really caused by the multiple coats of paint that it had on it. The great thing is it had absolutely zero rust. With that said --- there is absolutely ZERO bondo under the fresh paint! A few dents did get pulled via welded on studs. Outside of that this car was a perfect candidate for repaint.

Everything was done the right way. Right now the car sits masked off for undercoating. It's fully ready for re-assembly after that. I was planning on doing the undercoating this coming spring and then finally re-assembling it this summer.

Plans have changed.

I am looking for input on what you guys believe the body/chassis is worth (with all the doors, bumpers, etc. etc.

Looks like quality work, Paul. Sorry your circumstances have changed.

Are you selling just the shell? Are the engine and trans to be sold differently?

I will be selling everything. I have a fully built/rebuilt engine with 0 miles on it as well as a fully rebuilt transmission as well.

Hoping to sell the shell first. From there all the other parts will go on sale as well

You don't say if this is a numbers matching car, unless I missed it. If so I think you would do better selling the car as a whole or at least the engine, transmission and chassis together.

Why not just sell it as a basket case with all of the parts??

Dang, wish it was in Colorado. I’d be interested if it was local. Don’t have much input on price. It’s a tough one.

Man, for the right person this could be the ticket and could be a tremendous value.

I'd try to get $15K out of that shell with no parts. Getting strong money is going to be hard on a SC Targa. If it were a longhood Targa, I would probably add $10-$15K. But alas it's a SC - but a darn good one.

After another few months back and forth on this --- I have come to the decision to move forward with the commencement of a massive part out. Starting with the chassis/body which can be found in the classifieds section of the forum.

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t offer it as a package deal with all the parts you have.
I’m not interested in piecing together a car but I would be interested in a package that included most of the parts required to make a complete car.

you'll be selling parts forever. what's your time worth? selling as is with everything is going to be your best return unless you have a lot of time on your hands...

Have you looked at the recent for sale threads on engines and transmissions? They aren't exactly flying off the shelves at the moment.

I would at least post a pic or a brief description of what you have and completed. As others have said, this may be just what someone is looking for as a complete "assembly needed" project.

I agree the best way to get out of it is sell as an "assembly needed" project. You may get a few thousand more dollars parting it out, but it'll likely take a lot longer and require much more work dealing with dinguses (dingi?) Tough to pin a value on without a list of ingredients.

Bummer to have priorities shift to the point of potentially losing a big chunk of time and money spent on your car. I can relate - harder to find time/money/inspiration to spend on what feels like an eternal project.

I'm no expert, but I do keep a fairly close eye on the early SC market. You have to ask yourself what a nicely restored early SC is worth? $40K-50K for a good one? I'd guess that would be a very good one for that price. Very good.

Start the subtraction process. Rebuilt engine? If I wanted my engine rebuilt to day, it would cost $12-$15K. Transmission? Interior? Rubber? Interior? Brakes? Tires? Wheels? Your pre-finished Targa body? What about labor? There's the rub.

Pretty soon, you're over $50K. You can buy a really nice car cheaper.

You're underwater. I'm sorry for your loss. You're probably best parting the car to recoup your investment. It will be a long process and not fun. Tearing off the bandaid and living with your situation is sometimes preferable to a long, drawn out pain in the butt.

Sounds like you've chosen the latter. I'd take the $15K for the roller if I were you.

Holy crap 40-50k for a good one. Shoot, I have an awesome one with 295hp and I’d take $50k for it
No way is an sc targa worth $50k unless there’s 15-20k worth of gold in it.

It is worth maybe 15K now as a basket case car.
Or you could sell the engine alone in a moment, which is already out of the car for at least 9k especially when you show the 10K in receipts you have for the rebuild.
The rebuilt 915 box would also sell in a moment for 3K, which is also already out of the car and easily photographed and advertised with your receipts for the rebuild.
Now could you easily sell the painted roller with all your rebuilt bits for over 10k? I would think so.
It would be foolish to sell it as a whole disassembled car, it would sell easier and faster broken up to those three main components and sold that way.
